Leftover Beer

Post by John Sand »

Sometimes we finish with more than 5.125 gallons of clean beer to keg. Once or twice I have tried to bottle those last few quarts with mixed success. What do you do? How much is too much to waste? I have probably at least 1/2 gallon of Irish Red still in the bucket. Is it worth bottling 4 or 5 bottles?

I always brew 6 gallons so I can get 5 in the keg but sometimes I have enough left over for a bottle or two and I just keep those to taste much later just to see how some age. But, there are times when I just ditch it as 2 bottles isn't worth stressing over.

I keep a clean 2 liter bottle on hand and this. Left over beer goes in, squeeze out extra air and secure the cap, hit with 30 psi, shake the heck out of it to put co2 into solution, repeat adding co2 until no more goes in and toss it in the fridge. You can be tasting it as soon as it chilled.

^^^^^^ Have been doing this also when I have enough leftover, I use Mr. Beer 1L bottles I still have a couple of. Usually I can get most of the clear beer from the fermenter in the keg so the liquid is just below the gas dip tube.

I do this sometimes as well but not because I have more than can fit in a keg but because I want to test the beer instead of waiting for it to carb.
Its a great little tool that comes in handy and every kegger should have.
Comes in SS too!

My volumes are usually pretty spot on but if I have any left over I will certainly bottle it for giving away/sending to folks. For me, I went through the trouble of brewing it, so I'm going to use as much as the final product as possible.

Okay, you have all inspired/shamed me. ;)
I bottled 4.9x12oz of my Irish Red (Maureen O'Hara) and .5 liters of an experiment that may deserve another thread. I also ordered one of those carb caps.
Are you happy now?!
