$5 an ounce? No thank you. I'll wait until they get to $2.50 and maybe try some but once again, I do like that we have more choices.

Re: New Hop Available
This goes perfectly with your recent post about how long the craft beer craze can last. This is partly why breweries can continue to charge high dollar for limited beers. As long as there is a large variety of hard to get ingredients that are limited in supply, they will continue to make new beers in limited quantities. They will continue to be able to charge a lot for them and create a hype that people will stand in line for!!

Re: New Hop Available
FWIW, the $39 sampler pack is 1# of hops. That works out to $2.50/oz (before shipping).Beer-lord wrote:$5 an ounce? No thank you. I'll wait until they get to $2.50 and maybe try some but once again, I do like that we have more choices.
Re: New Hop Available
Sounds better but until I know more about what's so special, I don't want to try 1 lb of them. I'll let others do the ground work on that as I unload on my vast hop freezer of doom!mashani wrote:FWIW, the $39 sampler pack is 1# of hops. Re: New Hop Available
Considering that there is a large variety of types of hops in that sampler pack, it's more like buying 7 different types of hops 2-3oz each. Which might be enough to make me try some, since I brew all sorts of styles of beer, I could find a use for anything. A lot of those hops statistically at least fit right into my all late addition style brewing methods.Beer-lord wrote:Sounds better but until I know more about what's so special, I don't want to try 1 lb of them. I might do it...
Re: New Hop Available
I got the email from them, too.
I thought that South African hops sounded familiar so I went looking. Firestone used them in Luponic Distortion #4. My thoughts on it are here. Based on what I tasted and re-reading my notes, I think you would like these, Paul. It may sound funny to say but they seemed both familiar and unique at the same time.

Re: New Hop Available
So basically, you're telling someone who has a hop problem and is in hopcovery to abandon what I've learned and buy more hops? And and unknown variety?
Madness I tell you!

Re: New Hop Available
I ordered the sampler.
I am thinking SMASH ales.
The flavor descriptions are interesting. Nice high alpha hops for Hopburst and post boil additions to see how they taste? 2-3 gallon batches? Frankenstein with the leftovers?

Re: New Hop Available
Got some too. And will be trying out the new Vienna extract. Because it exists now. And that is good.
FWIW, they have a march madness promotion, 10% off and free shipping (if you add enough other stuff to hit $49), and it applies to the hop sampler. That puts them at $2.25/oz... it's below your $2.50 threshold... So you know you want some... Your freezer has room...Beer-lord wrote:So basically, you're telling someone who has a hop problem and is in hopcovery to abandon what I've learned and buy more hops? And and unknown variety?

Re: New Hop Available
I'm sure these will make their way to other places soon as I don't think NB has a special hold on these for long.
While my gut tells me to get some, my eyes tell me I have more than enough hops to last me for many more brews but I'll be following along with you guys to see what you think of these.
