I Ordered a Hop Spider
After repeatedly clogging the screened funnel today. I usually just pour most of the wort and trub into the fermenter, or at least until it's full enough. But today's batch went into a carboy, which requires a funnel. Next time the hops will go into a spider, SS 300 micron. Then I can just let the break material clog the screen.

I use one of these in my system. It has worked work very well so far. I got mine from brewhardware.com.

Something to consider when buying one of the basket type strainer things. The next paragraph is a statement on brewhardware.com
This unit has a 300 micron mesh which offers maximum pellet hop exclusion from the boil at the cost of less circulation during the boil which may impact utilization by 10% or so. If you use the 300 micron mesh, we recommend stirring the hops in the basket regularly during the boil.
So far this hasn't seemed to affect me much. If I'm looking to brew a hoppy beer I may add 10% more hops but I doubt I'd even know the difference .

I've read this too and the same could be said for some of the muslin bags used. On hop heavy beers I still plan to go commando for some hops. It's never really been a problem for me but as I'm playing with NEIPA's with tons of late hops, I thought this was a good idea.

I'm still using the homemade spider with a muslin sack that a lot of us built back on the MB forum. I've switched back and forth both ways, the last batch I did was a hop heavy IPA with LOT's of home grown whole hops and commando'd and what a plugged up mess that was. I am interested in the one of them things that you are all talking about.

You used whole hops commando? Wow. I don't think I've ever done that. I've almost always used jelly strainers or muslin bags.berryman wrote:I'm still using the homemade spider with a muslin sack that a lot of us built back on the MB forum. Yes and lot's of them on a Imperial IPA. I won't repeat that mistake againbpgreen wrote: You used whole hops commando? Wow. I don't think I've ever done that. I've almost always used jelly strainers or muslin bags.

Re: I Ordered a Hop Spider
I went commando with my homegrown hops in my fall harvest ale. First time I ever used whole hops, and learned why one should NOT go commando with them.

Re: I Ordered a Hop Spider
I think I have used whole hops commando, but only part of the hops in a batch. Some of them ended up in the fermenter, and freaked me out after the krausen fell. "What the heck is that?!"
Oh yeah, hops.

Re: I Ordered a Hop Spider
I used this today, and liked it. Because I am using a mondo kettle, I was a bit concerned that the spider did not submerge very deeply while hanging on the side. So I innovated and just set it on the bottom. Problem solved.
