Painted aluminum bottles with chalkboard paint

Post by Kealia »

My wife bought some aluminum bottles of cold brewed coffee recently from Whole Foods and I noticed that they were really thick and sturdy. We had some chalkboard paint on-hand from various projects so I used some to paint the bottles with the thought of using them for some homebrew. I only bottle now when I'm sending bottles away or giving to friends, but I haven't decided if I'm sending these away or keeping them for reuse myself yet.

I'll post more pics when I grab a pen to write on them, but these will be write-on labels and may offer a different look to homebrew bottles. I think the first use will be my milk stout - it seems fitting for a black bottle.

I have some friends that drink the Coors pint cans with the twist lids I saved about 8 but have not used them yet, I like the chalkboard paint idea.

The answer is "yes", but.....it did run a bit. Looking at it, it appears that the amount of paint that hits the neck causes it to run down a bit as both the 'front' and 'back' of the bottle look like this. I think with some careful spraying I could make this work as it appears to stick well to the rest of the bottle.

I'll play later with some pens after it has time to really dry/set to see how it works.

I put that paint on my keg coolers. The trick is multiple coats of light layers. That will help reduce the drips.

Testing continues. I just wrote on the glass tester with a chalk pen to see how it works. Tomorrow I will try to wipe it off and see how well it holds on.

There is at least one very small local brewery that doesn't really bottle their stuff regularly, only once in a while and when they do it's on bombers, and the bottles only end up in specific locally owned grocery stores when they do. They don't label their beer, they just write on the bottles like that.

After sitting for about 24 hours, I tried wiping the writing off with my hand and it didn't smear (that's good).

Then I took a little water on a paper towel and rubbed it and it came mostly off, leaving a "ghost" of the writing.
Then, just a tad of dishsoap and it's off completely (the neck).

I'm calling this a success - even on the glass bottles. Cool.

Yes. We've used it on other things but never in this capacity.
I'm excited to put some of the milk stout in this first batch.
