Brewing for Yeast Feast this weekend!!!!

Post by Dawg LB Steve »

Forgive me Borg for I have not brewed since February 19th :( ! I will actually be able to brew this weekend, our Homebrew Club is doing a yeast fest for the mid July meeting. We came up with a common wort for all to use and each of us using one or more different yeast. This should be really interesting to see what yeast imparts to the same wort base.

5 gallon batch grain bill and hop schedule:

8lbs 2 row
12oz Carapils
4oz C10
20 IBU neutral hop @ 60
Medium Body Mash @ 152 for 60 min.

Since I am doing 2 different yeast I will scale this up to 10.5 gallons, the hop I am going with is 1 oz Nugget which will put me about 23 IBU, the yeasties I picked are WLP810 San Fransisco Lager (Cali-Common) and WLP029 Kolsch and ferment both @ 65 degrees.

That sounds like fun to me. I think you will be blown away when you see just how much difference yeast make. Just the few times I've split batches using different yeasts proved to me that you can't take that for granted. Completely different beers to enjoy.
Please share the results, I'm interested.

Sounds like fun! Looking forward to hearing how they turn out especially since you are running each yeast at their upper and lower extremes.

The WLP810 I have always fermented my Cali-Common at 64-65 and they have turned out pretty good, so I don't want to mess with that yeast. Really am looking forward to this meeting, The SMaSH hopfest got tongue numbing, kind of what you would call palette fatigue.

Depending on the number of beers, I know what you mean about palette fatigue.
I haven't done split batches for yeast in years now, but when I did I was always surprised at how different the beers were - even when not using really specific strains like a Cali Common or Hef strain.
I hope it went well.

Hotter than Hades Sunday, mid 90's 110% humidity, I was also doing yard work during the mash and boil only had one hop addition @ 60 so I was cutting, edging and weedwacking the yard. Could only get it cooled to the mid 70's, put the fermenters in basement and let them drop to upper 60's about 4 hours later and pitched the yeast, got up in the morning and put 2 ice packs in the bins and covered up with towels got to 64 degrees and that is where they both stayed swapping out ice packs. Second time I have done a BIAB brew, first big batch BIAB, starting to like this way.

Don't forget you can always use gelatin if need be (I'm sure you know this).

There are worse things in the world than a non-perfectly clear beer.

Yep, not really sweating it. Just can't believe I forgot a step, it was only 4 months since the last brew.

I understand that. If I don't brew for a month sometimes things don't feel as comfortable for me. After 4 months, I'd likely forget to pitch yeast!
