My gripe today

Post by Beer-lord »

I've only ordered from 47Hops once before and it's been years and I don't remember any problems. But since they had Hull Melon so cheap, I grabbed a lb of those plus a lb of Centennial figuring the shipping would be about the same. They gave me options and the cheapest option was FedEx home delivery for $17.83!!!! I went with it since I was saving money on the hops on sale but did mention it in my 'Deals' post this week.
Today I got notification that my hops shipped and a tracking number from USPS. USPS is much cheaper but that was not an option I was given. So, I was ticked possibly being taken advantage of and fired off an email asking why am I charged for FedEx but it's shipping via USPS (much cheaper). I'll see how good their customer service is and how they handle this but I won't likely buy from them again if this looks like a setup.

Anyone else purchase from them and if so, tell me what you know about their shipping charges.

Update: I did get a quick reply that I should have had an option for USPS but there was a problem with the order process. Then a second email saying, "I just checked and the Centennial you bought had the wrong shipping dimensions on it. :/ Programmer error. They just have prepared it, it hasn’t been picked up. I’m refunding you $10.63 so you can buy more hops from us next time."
So which was it, order process problem or program error?
Either way, they stepped up, gave me a discount and I'll just shut up and let this post stand as a warning that if you order from them, make sure you don't get charged too much for shipping. 2 lbs of hops don't cost $17 to ship, even via FedEx.

The problem with so many of these places (on line retailers) is that the majority of people don't pay attention or don't say anything so the company gets away with overcharging. Sure the hops are cheap but they make up for in on the shipping. Bait and switch type of thing.

My opinion as a second rate programmer, those are not necessarily two different things.

Makes me glad I have a full-service LHBS. I have to drive a good 40 minutes to get there, but it's worth it to me.

I had the same type of "programming error" from Homebrewsupply. They simply cancelled my order and didn't bother telling me. Terrible service.
