Hop Tree?

Post by TonyKZ1 »

We seen this tree Sunday while walking around in a local state park. My wife took a picture of the tree and it's hops fruit. She searched for more info and then sent the name to me. Apparently it's a Ostrya virginiana, commonly called American hop hornbeam, is a deciduous, Missouri native tree. Copied from the link, Female catkins are followed by drooping clusters of sac-like, seed-bearing pods which, as the common name suggests, somewhat resemble the fruit of hops.

I just thought it was kind of amazing, as we've lived here for many years and don't remember seeing those trees before. I smelled the fruit, it didn't have any aroma yet, but apparently it only resembles the hops so I probably can't pick them and use it for beer. Ah well.
