I must have been "conditioned" shortly after high school though back then, hoppy beers didn't exist.

Can see the conditioning theory, it took a while for me to start appreciating hoppy beer, and also as in his example with the oysters, I had an experience with Ouzo nearly 40 years ago and to this day cannot even stomach the smell of black licorice.

It all makes perfect sense. I have a similar story about evolution and migraines but I won't bore anybody with it here. It generally follows a similar thought process, though.

This conditioning is the very reason I brewed a milk stout to drink. I figure that by the end of 5 gallons (or close to it after giving some away), if I don't like it I will have given it a proper chance to get acclimated to it.

A person might not like Lobster all that well the first time tried, but for some reason you think that it is really good and want more no matter what it cost. Same as beer, if all you ever drank was Coors Light and tried a IPA or a stout you might not like it initially, but then the thinking kicks in and you think that is pretty good tasting beer I like that and then you want more. But doesn't happen to everybody though.

I can relate and laughed on this, Peppermint schnapps got me about the same many years ago and I don't like peppermint candy anymore. Ouzo is good with me, I had a Greek friend that always had some at the campfire in our racing days.

I used to really dislike any remotely hoppy beers. And I thought mamiata (anybody know what he's doing now?) was spot on about stouts being yucky. But now, I'm most likely to reach for an ipa, and I regularly brew and drink stouts.

The only thing that I've ever OD's on was "Elephant Lager" back in college days. Because I drank it while playing pool like it was Heineken. But it wasn't LOL.

I've not tried an Elephant in a long time, so I don't know if it would make me gag or not.

I don't know if the security guard has yet forgiven me for how I left his shoes. He might not like shoes anymore for all I know.

Hoppy beers, I dunno that I ever disliked them, but I built my way up first with stuff like Boston Lager and then through the old school APAs like SNPA and such, so it was a gradual build up. I didn't go from Little Kings directly to Pliney LOL.

I think I'm a living example of this. I used to not care for hop-forward beers, but over time, I've come to appreciate them and I've developed a "tolerance" for higher IBUs.

Those are actually two different things, which I am sure you know but a lot of people who just go buy big IPAs off the shelf don't understand the difference and think IBUs = all that IPA hop in your face flavor.

Yeah, it wasn't worded as elegantly as it should have been. I should have said "High IBU IPAs."
