I have good new and bad news
The good news is that I am extremely pleased with my base recipe for Old Smokey Amber Ale. I decided to try smoking the grains and seeing what kind of result I get. But I wanted the base recipe to be something good before I added such a radical tweak. So I formulated an amber ale recipe, and today I got it into the keg. When I checked the SG, I drank the sample, as usual, and this is a real nice amber all on its own. So I'm very interested in seeing how the smoke influences it, and what I can learn from that process.
The bad news is I was going to brew a batch of Trilby Brown Ale tomorrow, but I have to put those plans on hold. You see, when I was putting the OxyClean Free under the kitchen sink after cleaning up the carboy, I saw that the drain was leaking. Looks like it's right at the U-bend joint. Oh boy. Well, I called the plumber, explained the situation, and he set up an appointment for the 12-2 window tomorrow afternoon. Good thing I'm off tomorrow, too.
But I sure as heck won't be brewing, since I need that sink for it. I'm just glad I caught it.

Dave, call off the plumber. That part is easily replaceable. I could describe it, but just youtube it.

Yes that is a very easy DIY project.

Re: I have good new and bad news
Thanks. I know it's probably not too difficult, but I've learned through bitter experience to leave even these "easy fixes" to the professionals. I'm not real handy, and I have a very low frustration level.

You are wise, Grasshopper.
I was awake too much Sunday night. I had two projects on deck Monday: replacing the windshield wiper linkage in my '79 Chrysler, or drilling the boat trailer tongue to install a hinge to fold it.
I decided to put those off, and ran some errands instead. Don't drill steel when you are tired.

79 Chrysler? I thought my wife's 98 Honda CRV was old! How much mileage does the poor nag have on her?

Re: I have good new and bad news
There's also the fact that it would require procurement of tools I don't have, which would cost me time and money anyway, and the big determining factor of having to subject my arthritic knees to the ordeal of working under a sink. I retired from the pest control business so I wouldn't have to go under sinks anymore.John Sand wrote:You are wise, Grasshopper.

Only 104k. Practically new, yet still 40 years old, and therein lies the rub. Well built though it is, certain parts just don't last that long. And some of those parts are my knees!Beer-lord wrote:79 Chrysler? I thought my wife's 98 Honda CRV was old! How much mileage does the poor nag have on her?

I learned a long time ago to leave plumbing to someone else. Even if it's "easy". Plumbing and me do not get along.

Re: I have good new and bad news
Yeah, it took the guy less than an hour to fix it and fix it right. Would have taken me twice that long and still probably be a hash job.
