New Brewer

Just wanted to check in and say hi.
Brewing my first batch of beer from Brewdemon. I have the 2 gallon fermenter tank. Only 48 hours into this batch and eagerly awaiting for bubbles to come out of the air lock on top. Nothing yet. I read where I shouldn't be too concerned. But would luv to see some bubbles. (first timer thrills I guess). However I do have a nice layer of bubbles on top of the wort. I will eventually purchase a hydrometer as my Brewing experience continues. Looking forward to learning more on this site :)

Hello Rick and good to have you aboard on the BORG
you most likely are making beer, the foam and bubbles on top is good and it is brewing. Some beers will bubble the airlock hard and some don't, but are still making beer. A hydrometer is a good tool to own for brewing.

Trust me even experienced brewers get school girl giddy over air lock bubbles. (Some of us may be air lock sniffers too :whistle: )
One reason for no bubbles can be an leak around the lid as the Co2 takes the path of least resistance. The layer of bubbles you're seeing is called krausen and proof that the yeast is doing its job.

Thanx for the replies I received. Lately I've been learning and using words like Wort, Trub, Krausen, Pitch and still learning more. The wife thinks I learned a new language. It's great to have a site of seasoned brewers here that help out others. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions as my knowledge "ferments". :thanks:

Bubbles on top ==> all systems go for bottle-up!

Hydrometer good. Large hydrometer bad.
Hydrometer jar good. Large hydrometer jar bad.

Large hydrometer needs a large hydrometer jar needs 'large' beer sample.
Large beer sample hurts small volume brewers like us.

Suggest getting a 100 ml (~3.5 oz) jar and a 'small' hydrometer.

Welcome! The krausen forming is all you need to know. You're making beer. I'll admit, as have the others, that it's a rush to see the airlock bubble, though. Eight years in, and I still love the "check on the baby" when I come home from work.
