I am going to do a IPA up next with home grown hops, it is an extract version but I am copying a kit that I brewed a couple times a few years back and liked called Hop Head Double IPA https://www.midwestsupplies.com/downloa ... ctions.pdf
6 LB Amber LME
3.5 LB Amber DME
.250 Aromatic Malt (Belgian)
.750 Crystal 60L
.500 Victory Malt
30 min Steep
It will have close to the same Hop schedule but with a few more additions and Chinook replacing Centennial.
Even though all My own hops I am going to use some Brewers Gold.
1 hour boil
1 oz brewers gold pellet and .5 Nugget whole @60
.5 Cascade @45
.5 Chinook @30
1 oz Cascade @20
.5 Chinook @15
.5 Chinook @10
1 oz Cascade and 1 oz MT Hood @ 5
Dry hop with 1 oz. Cascade and 1 oz Chinook
2 - 11.5 packets of us-05 fermented in the very low 60's
Should OG 1.080 and around 104 IBU

Re: Walking Dead x4 IPA
I've made Hop Head DIPA a few times. Once with their kit and twice more on my own. I never thought it was hoppy enough but I did enjoy it. I saw the recipe the other day and thought about rebrewing it again. And now, I just might!

Only thing is who knows what IBUs it will have with home grown hops? Lots of stuff in that hop schedule will contribute IBUs of some sort, but the only known factor would be the brewers gold.
Re: Walking Dead x4 IPA
I usually use pellet hops for bittering, since I know the AA%, but I also almost always make at least one batch a year using all homegrown hops, just to be able to do it. I think my brother has used his homegrown hops almost exclusively for some time. He just guesses at how many to use on the first batch, then adjusts on subsequent batches.mashani wrote:Only thing is who knows what IBUs it will have with home grown hops? That's why I am including them and the last pack in my freezer also and want to use them up...mashani wrote:Only thing is who knows what IBUs it will have with home grown hops? Lots of stuff in that hop schedule will contribute IBUs of some sort, but the only known factor would be the brewers gold.

Re: Walking Dead x4 IPA
I converted this recipe over to AG, dropped the OG a little and am going to use Chinook pellet hops instead of Brewers Gold just to keep with my 4 malt 4 hop theme. Still all the rest will be home grown hops. I really liked this beer and so did everyone that tried it and I got a first place Blue ribbon at our County fair in the IPA category. It most likely will be a little lighter in color with AG but should still have the nice red tint from the C-60 I have all the ingredients for this now, but have 2 more brews I want to make first.
