$4.47/lb hops

Post by bpgreen »

47 hops is having a clearance sale on 2016 crop year hops. They're $4.47 per pound or $2.24 per half pound. I bought some half pounds, thinking that the smaller packages would be worth the extra penny per pound.

Note that they filed chapter 11 sometime last year, so this is probably an inventory clearance/going out of business sale.

From what I read, they got stiffed on some sales contracts by some breweries, but they paid for the hops they contracted, so they wound up with a bunch of hops that they had already sold, but they never got paid for.

These are from crop year 2016, but they've been vacuum sealed and frozen, so they should be good.

I was curious so did some reading. Still in Chapter 11, but they say they are wrapping that up. This is not a going out of business sale, they did not declare Chapter 7. They are liquidating old inventory, as noted, from 2016.

Looks like Brewers committed to inventory via contract, then refused to take them when their business didn't grow enough. Looks like 47hops was in effect providing credit to breweries by contracting for hops but not having paying customers.

I have had some in depth conversations with new brewery owners in the past year, and many of them have great enthusiasm but lack a realistic business mindset. There will be a lot of small breweries closing.

If you're not going to use these within a year, I wouldn't buy them.

I love a bargain, and hops. I will check my inventory, and theirs. I think I have bought year old hops before.
Just yesterday I ordered a pound of Cascade to get to a discount. Effectively that pound cost $12 after the $10 discount. I probably use more Cascade than anything, but it will still take a while to go through. Still, $4.47@ pound is pretty hard to beat.

I got their tweet and almost pulled the plug but I just have so much hoppage in the freezer I didn't. The 12 step program is really working well for me!

I started to put on my BeerLord Hat and then though the better of it, as I have a lot of hops already.

So I "just" got 8oz of each of these.
