Look everyone Phil's Weinner is getting bigger.

He's cute, but why the sweeter in FL?

Just a polo. Sunday brunch day on Park Ave so we gotta look sharp! It was fairly cool out cuz it rained a lot that day. Actually we ran into Ibasterd that same day in passing.

Okay guys here's the problem. I traded my giant dog crate to the vet for two small ones for my Westie and mini-dachshund for the drive to Virginia and hotel stays.

The girls are 7 and 10 so its the old dog new tricks thing. I need to get them used to spending time in the crates without going bonkers, especially barking like mad in a hotel room if we go out to eat etc.

I left them out and open on the floor so they could smell them and get used to them for a while and then put them in the crates with a fresh soup bone, the Westie did okay but Jazzy acted like she was panicking and was scratching like crazy to get out. I was sitting right there and talking to them and only had in for a few minutes thinking I'd lengthen the time inside gradually.

I'm going to have to get them used to road trips as well as neither does car trips well but I want them in a crate while I am driving just to be safe.

How would my fellow home brewing dog lovers handle this???

I think Jazzy might recognize my scurrying about as a cue that change is about to occur. Where she used to want to stay in the yard all day she doesn't tolerate being left out more than ten minutes. Neither of them have ever been in a move before though.

Okay... how do you fit a king size mattress into medium sized dog crate.

you only need a wee bit of it. It will make it smell like home.

Just kidding since they sleep in my bed but I did take a blanket that I leave on the floor for them in the living room and cut some out to fit the crates.

Yesterday they both stayed inside with their bones for quite a while which is good vs. Jazzy freaking out.

I need them comfortable in the crates first then in the crates in the car with in and out pee breaks etc. neither of them have been on long road trips. I want to get them comfortable with a crate then with it in a car then out of the crate to go potty for stops on the road.

Any pointers?

Put them in the car, go around the block, literally... Take them out, reward them, take them back to their safe spots.

Repeat later in the day... And then again even later.

After a half dozen trips, begin adding blocks, several a trip, until you are at a mile or three.

Knowing the trips take them to a safe spot and they get a treat helps a lot.

My current friend hated cars (got physically sick every time) until I started this routine. Helped to keep a hand on him at first (comfort aspect) but it wasn't long before he was ok without it.

After about two weeks, I was able to take him on a 250 mile trip and back... With the return trip being the best of the bunch.

Now, he looks forward to his rides with Papa!

Thanks Big Papa that is what I was thinking of doing so glad to hear you tried it and it works. The Westie gets car sick too so I am hoping that she will get to feel more comfortable riding in the crate.

Alright. Just to prove that a sick sense of humor runs through my family and not with me...

My older brothers' daughter and her husband have a dachshund-mix dog. They also have a cat. The dachshund is veeeerrrry friendly. Much too friendly for the cat and to prove it's point of view it clawed the dog in the face a while back and the dog lost the use of one if it's eyes. My niece had named the dog Mustang after the mascot of the college that her and her husband had attended. But now my brother calls the dog "Dick".

Why?

My own little Ferdinand, aka Lili. Soft as mink, happy as a clam, likes to sit and smell the flowers. Chews up doorways and the occasional squirrel/bunny.

Just thought I would let everyone know. I told you all about the loss of Charlie a few weeks ago. I wanted another Golden but was over-ruled by SWMBO who rightly pointed out that in 10-12 years from now I may not be in any shape to care for an old 70 lb dog. Therefore we have a new Westie puppy for the past 10 days. Very cute and playful and getting along well with our Yorkie. We miss Charlie still but little Maggie is making it easier
