I used a glass carboy once but the glass and the fact I have 2 kids under the age of 7 really made me rethink using them after seeing some pictures of the busted carboys and the carnage that ensued. I had 2 given to me, I gave 1 to my BIL who uses it for mead and I keep the other way out of the way from them b/c its not like the glass os going to breakdown over time and watching the yeasties at work is awesome.

Thinking about picking up a conical for use as a second fermentation vessel. That way I can do full 5 gallon batches if I want or just 2.5 gallons, or do two 2.5 gallon ones with some different tweaks to each etc. I like the idea of the conical and the principle seems sound. I also really like the idea of being able to use a standard airlock as well.
Anyone with one want to chime in?

If you check the main page of beerborg.com you will find an early review I did of the Brew Demon fermenter that you might find helpful. Also not sure if you found out yet but Beerborg members get discounts on all Brew Demon orders.Just check out the members only discount section here on the forum.
I would offer more info normally but I don't have internet access except on my phone right now!

Yeah i read that review already, seems like it is a good choice, I think having two 2.5 gallon fermenter would give me more flexibility over a 5 gallon one. Thanks for mentioning the discount I will check that out!
Edit: Just signed up for brewdemon, holy crapoli that is a fantastic discount. Those guys rock!

I have 3 of the conical fermenters now and and I plan to make a 5 gallon porter recipe and split it between 2 of these fermenters and add some bourbon soaked hickory chips to one of them so I can compare the base recipe with Hickory Bourbon porter to see what the difference is.
Sam (a.k.a. BrewDemon) takes pretty good care of us here on the forum with good discounts and he is really easy to access right here in the forum if you have any question or concerns you can send him a PM. He wants to make sure everyone gets treated fairly if there is ever a problem.
Also the recipes they have are tried and true, being the old Mr. Beer extracts that so many used and liked over the years before Coopers bought them out.
Make sure to let us know what you end up getting!

I've got 2 of the Conicals now and will pick up one or two more next time I land on brewdemon.
The true 2.5 gallon size w/spigot and the bigger opening and easier cleaning makes me very happy. They are a good bit of equipment.
I've done a full 5 gallon split batch using them now and it was nice. Used to do 4.8ish gallon splits between LBKs, but would never have tried a full 5. Full 5 is no problem with 2 LBCs.

Plan for now is to pick up a conical with bubbler airlock and start doing the 5 gallon partial extract kits that my LHBS sells I think

I'm reluctant to post this but I will have to say that I've cracked a bottle of every beer I've made in LBCs at 3 weeks, even 2.5 weeks in the bottle, mostly with a 2 week fermentation schedule... and they have all been really good. Better then I think they would have been out of an LBK at 3 weeks in the bottle (and I've used LBKs for ~3 years now). I can not legitimately explain this, except that maybe the conical thing actually does help in some mysterious way. I do get less trub in my bottles, and I do get extra bottles from every batch, not just due to the extra capacity, I'm getting more beer even beyond that - I think because if I tilt it to get the extra beer I'm not sucking gobs of trub into my wand like often would happen with the LBKs unless I cold crashed, so I actually am getting more out of it before giving up. (Tilt it = put a book under the back leg when I get near the end).
And if you've read my previous posts you know I was a conical skeptic as far as the idea that it would make better beer or cleaner beer or less twangy beer or whatever, since there isn't really a trub dump.
But so far at least, I seem to have been wrong.
Take that with a grain of salt, YMMV, I'm just telling you my experience so far. Like I said, I was reluctant to post this.
