Coconut IPA, my version

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Thanks, I had trouble with my beer gun and was worried about the carb. I think the hop oils in the coconut I added in the keg for 5 days inhibits some of the foam. It comes out foamy from my tap and dissipates quickly. And, nothing will clear this completely due to the coconut but that's the way it was with the Stone version.
I actually think I could cut back a bit on the coconut to let the hops shine more and worry that as it ages, it will be too much coconut. That's why I suggested drinking it sooner than later.
I never used Rakau and Belma before and am not a fan of flavored beer but so far, everyone's liked it and it is somewhat what I imagined and you're right, this one would go better in the summer so since I finally got some hops that are closer to the original recipe, I'll do it again.
I don't get much citrus but it's definitely tropical and I would say at least half of that's from the coconut.

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
I had this last night Paul. I too had no head (not that it matters to me) so maybe it is the coconut oil that prevents it.
It was slightly hazy, as you noted, but otherwise a very handsome beer - if I do say so myself.
I couldn't pick up coconut in the aroma but you all know by now (I hope) that my sense aren't the greatest in terms of picking out details. It did smell hoppy and yummy, though.
My beer fridge was running a little cold so the beer was a bit 'sharp' at first. Basically, it was too cold and the hops were just a bit bitter. As it warmed to a more normal temp (high 40's - low 50's) it evened out and became much smoother. The carb was great and the mouthfeel was a bit silky/creamy as Chis noted. Knowing that this was a coconut IPA I picked it up a bit on the finish, but without knowing I wouldn't have been good enough to call it out as coconut. That's a knock on me, not you beer.
All in all, I liked it. Not as much as some of your others like Chupacabra Charlie or the Deep Ellum IPA, but that's a matter of taste.
And as always, although you'll have people believe otherwise, it was well brewed.
Thank you sir!

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
I grabbed a bit from the keg last night and did still taste the coconut but it is definitely fading fast. The head also lasted a bit longer but not much.
This was definitely one to get to quick and fast before the flavor is gone.
Thanks for your opinion on this.
By the way, an old bottle of Chupacsbra Charlie I opened recently was awful and I pitched it. Another one that died early.

I've been there, too. When I first started brewing I kept 1 bottle of each brew around and let them build up for a year before going back to open them up. The majority of them were heavily oxidized. Clearly I was doing something wrong early on that wasn't allowing my beers to age very well.
Now, I just don't let them sit around very long!

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Ok, my turn, my turn.
As others have stated, you could have poured this from six feet and gotten very little head. The carbonation level of the beer was good though, with a cloudy appearance.
Aroma, with just a slight run of the nose over the glass I get a slight citrus smell of hops. Sticking my nose in the glass and giving a deep steady inhale gives me the sweet smell of coconut and it's there every time I do it. Would I have known that was the smell had I not known it was in there, maybe. But it was something different I could pick out. I have a few ounces still left in the fridge covered with foil, to see if the wifey can tell what it is without knowing (I'll post back after that).
Initial taste on the tongue is sweet followed by nice bitter on the back side. Medium body with a nice rich mouth feel.
Now as it warms more sweetness is coming forward.
The Kick Ass glass just make it even better. Very well put together beer Paul, you're not scared to try different things and good beer is the result. Thank you.

So sorry about the lack of head, it's got to be the coconut oil. Just pour a bit from the keg and this had was fine.......for 45 seconds and 1 sip.

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Almost out of this and am going to try to save some in the keg a bit longer to see how it ages. I like it more now that the coconut is slowly dying down. The hops are starting to shine a bit which I think is odd but I'm sure they're fading too, its likely just that the coconut was covering some of it.
As for head, it's gotten better too. Maybe the oils have dissipated a bit????
Anyway, I'm really enjoying this and since I'm so hard on myself about my beers, I had to say something positive about myself.

BL Positive indeed. I'm sure that brew is yummy as yummy can be.. I tasted a Rye coconut last week that was awesome. I'd like to brew a coconut beer now as well. Thanks for the inspiration.
Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Rye coconut. Now that sounds interesting. Care to share what it was? I might want to see if I can find some recipe info on it. I'm working on a number of rye recipes but coconut wasn't in the picture......until now.

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Well it was at the Santa Fe Brewing Co. but it was a batch done by the brew club. All I was told was that it was a Rye Porter, but the coconut at the backend so great.. I'll try to get more info and share with you and the Borg.
Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Now that its nearing the end, look at the head on this thing, and it won't quit. I guess all the coconut oil has gone and all that's left is meringue goodness. It's actually much more balanced now and with more tropical hops, I'll be doing this again in the next few months. It's not for everyone but I'm enjoying it.

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Paul, I thought you might one day want to try this with a future batch of this beer (if you decide to brew another). Farmhouse Brewing Supply has a new hop available that has the same flavor and aroma profile as Belma, called Huell Melon. Strawberry and melon are the key descriptors with this one, but the main difference between this and Belma, is Belma is a high alpha hop at over 10%, while Huell Melon is low at just a touch over 5%. This just means you would need more quantity to achieve the same effect, but I thought maybe you'd think about it.

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Thanks for the info. I was just on that site yesterday. Man, I have so many pounds of hops now, I could brew everyday for months and not run out. Plus, I did get some Belma and Calypso since I am gong to brew this again in a few months. I think I did pretty well with my hop subs but I wanted to try to get closer to tropical.
Don't you just love the names they give these hops? Sounds like this one would make a better APA then an IPA.
Did you grab any for yourself?

Re: Coconut IPA, my version
Oh sweet. I haven't got any of that one because I bought a pound of Belma when it was first released. I still have 14 oz left of it, and I've used it twice on two batches of Bubs' Pale Ale, which is an APA. That melon and strawberry profile is fuhhhhhmaaaaaazing! I liked it so much that it was one of the brews I sent to competition. Hope to get some good feedback about that one from the judges
