So the tun turns out to be an 8 gallon. So essentially i can only brew around 4 gallon all grain?

No. I made myself a tun out of a 5-gallon cooler, and that's what I make my 5-gallon AG batches in. Even 11 or 12 pounds of grain can be mashed in a 5-gallon tun.
