I agree with DaYooper as far as ads go, I barely notice them and sometimes they help out the site you are on so once in a while I'll click through to order.

And I know this thread is a bit of a joke but, just to point out, alcohol is only illegal to Muslims in Abu Dhabi. It is available and legal for non-muslims.

My banner ads are for a store called Kilt World Super Center and Amazon Books is trying to sell me a copy of "The Encyclopedia of Sarcasm".

But no. The ads would be for stores that YOU visit like BirdFoodIsUs, To Kill A Mockingbird Cafe', a book at Amazon called "Mr. Clean's Guide to Cleaning Bird Droppings Off Of Everything and Anything", and Rachael Ray's Cookbook "How to Eat Like a Bird".

Glad I shop local. Feed store for Texas Sized Turkeys, Local authors' book "Killing Mockingbirds For Fun and Profit", and my favorite local shop Dialing in Your Droppings - Tools for Targeting those who annoy you.

All of your internet traffic, search and direct entry, is captured by cookies, pixels, and other technology and fed back to the various ad serving technologies and then spit back to you in the form of ads, yes.

I am currently looking at an AAA ad at the top of this page. Recently I tried their TripTik website tool.

Site owners have some control over what ads are displayed, advertising companies have control of where ads are displayed. So, if you're on a forum about trucks, it would be logical for an advertiser to display ads trying to sell you competing trucks (or just trucks if the forum is not brand specific).

Some companies that sell on the internet show ads also. Go to Target and pick any product and then scroll down. On a product detail page for a Blu-Ray player at Target, at the bottom are ads for Radio Shack, Crutchfield and other companies selling Blu-Ray players. Target has chosen to maximize ad revenue at the cost(?) that some may go exploring instead of buying the product from Target. Very short-sighted.

Hmmm Rick, what would be interesting to show would be competitor ads that are all more expensive than what the host store is selling the same product for. You wouldn't get any ad revenue but seeing as the "mark" is looking at the product, s/he is probably going to buy it, and that would eliminate a lot of cross shopping if they can see for a "fact" that the host is the least expensive out there.

Unfortunately you cannot control that. With dynamic pricing companies raise and lower prices multiple times a day, or even an hour. And, most ads are not specific to price, more like "ABC Company sells Kent Golding hops" or "Visit ABC Company for our huge hop selection", or "Hop on down to Kangaroo Jack's clothing store" (example of bad targeting).

Once you leave, you often don't come back.

Target does many things that are ill advised.

Sorry about the ads, but the Google ads at the top and bottom of every pages do help to generate a little revenue for the site and since I moved everything to a dedicated server that revenue helps to defer that added cost. Rick is correct that the ads are based on you web history and that the site owner has limited control over what is displayed in those ads. I have tried to minimize how intrusive those ads are by not inserting them in the middle of the topic streams like I've seen on other forum and keeping them to only the top and bottom of the page because I know then can be quite annoying. I have been thinking about offering up an "Ad Free" paid option for the forum but I'm still trying to figure out how best to implement something like that and maintain it as subscription for those who choose to pay for no ads.

Louie, I think you're doing a FABULOUS job, and please don't worry about the ads. Unless you want to. I think we all know they're just a fact of life and you've kept them to a bare minimum. Just my two cents, but I'd bet everyone here feels the same. You have nothing to worry about.

I agree with JoeC there LM.

You now we just like to be rascals once in a while on here and making fun of ads is one of the greatest targets once we've aim at politics, Hollywood, BMC ...Oh and each other.

Like I've mentioned, Adblock Plus, I don't see ANY of those adds on any site, period. Did I mention it's free?
