So going to a brewpub is the best thing for the brewery, profit-margin-wise.

I would think so. If they run a tap room on their premises, then they don't have the distibution, and the retail cost would be theirs to keep.

My point exactly. Defiant Brewery is a fairly small local concern here in my town. They've got there brewpub, conveniently located right next to the commuter train station, and they've only recently begun distributing in the county, and even then, it's only two of their most popular sellers (Medusa IPA and Muddy Creek Lager), and one specialty highly hopped IPA, which I've only seen in limited quantities.

My point is that it took them quite some time to get their stuff bottled and out to the stores, and while it may expand beyond the county (and I certainly hope it does), it's still a relatively small part of their operation/profit margin. You get fresher stuff and a bigger selection if you go inside for a session.
