I believe the modern day NFL started with the merger of the AFL and NFL in 1970. I would even go back a few more years to the first Super Bowl in 1967 between the two leagues. Otherwise it's kind of like saying the ancient Greeks are a great Olympic team...

Pretty sure it was based on a US Steel or Steel and Iron Workers logo.

That's because they couldn't handle the real football we used to bring to the field, so they whined and moaned and got the rules changed forever...
