I went ahead and sent the text the guy asked for. I will gather more information before making any solid decisions. However, the more I think about this the more it sounds like something I don't want to do. Brewing on this level has always seemed like it would be hot miserable back breaking work to me. You are dealing with around 400 pounds of grain in a 7 barrel system. Even more than that when shoveling it out of the mash tun. Then there is the time commitment. I have been really liking not having to be anywhere at any given time. I might feel differently in 6 months, who knows. And I am sure it will take this guy some time to set his system up. I still don't want to simply blow off this opportunity so I will at least talk to the guy to find out what he has in mind. If nothing else I can bring it up in a home brew club meeting and give some young buck a chance.

Hmmm...
Sounds like a great opportunity for the club in general if you choose not to take it on by yourself.
Perhaps suggesting you as the lead guy, and then getting the club involved so each member can rotate through the experience...
Imagine the interesting 'specials' that could be concocted in addition to one or two 'house' brews...
This way, you get to mentor and not break your back!

PapaG makes some good points.
And I think you're wise not to jump into it, Roger. Leave the door open a bit, but hedge your bet. You don't need to commit within the next 24 hours, after all.

Good Luck to you in whichever way you decide to go! An ex coworker had a similar offer to brew beer for a local restaurant/bar. He wanted me to help him out. At first, he and I were all gung ho. This could be great! I would love to brew for a living! We looked into equipment. Talked about recipes and such. This was going to be a dream come true. Then the both of us realized how green we were in the brewing world. So he had to decline the offer. We both had an awful lot to learn. The restaurant/bar owner does have a couple of brews that a small pizza shop/brewpub (Dommy's pizza/D&D brewing) brew for him.

Roger I'm assuming a few things here, please let me know if I got this right.
1) The owner already has all of the licensing in place
2) He already has the 7 barrel system installed and working
3) He's providing you with a young back for de-graining and cleaning
4) Do you thing you will be looking for another 'hobby', once brewing becomes a 'job'
IMHO the idea of having 'deadlines' makes my own skin crawl now and I'm still not retired. Brewing is hard hot sweaty work as far as I can tell from the pro brewers I've spoken too.
Anyhow I definitely can understand your dilemma, as usual it comes down to choosing between an exciting career change and giving up the freedom of retirement.

Head brewer does not clean. That is for interns. Where is this, I will do it and you can give me advice
