Attended the Arrowhead Hops Harvest Festival yesterday. Picked some hops, had some homebrew and met some great people.

Nice operation Andy has going there. They were established in 2010, and have 10 rows of plants growing. Each row is about 200ft long and looked to be 15 feet high. They supply a couple of local small breweries.

There were four varieties that we picked (Columbus, Magnum, Willamette and Cascade). I believe they already picked a few more prior to the fest.

They had tents set up to shield us from the sun. It's been super hot and dry here in Iowa this year. The shade was very welcome.

Overall it was a great time and a good learning experience for me since I will be planting my first hops next spring. Andy said we could expect the pre-orders to start sometime in January.

How did you restrain from putting your face in the box and inhaling?

Glen, great pictures! I had the chance to do some hop picking yesterday too. Not at the same scale as you but it was still pretty cool. The thing that I liked the most was the smell! :D

We're you able to take any hops home with you? :fedora:

Not for me Paul. I want to be cremated with my ashes scattered at the base of the hop plants. Then have a beer made from those hops.

It'd be so bitter even you might not be able to drink it.

Thanks guys, had a great time! Didn't put my face in there, but did inhale a couple handfuls when picking. Came home with yellow hands from the lupulin, so got to enjoy the aromas for a while after I left! Unfortunately, that's all I took home with me. I could only be there for a couple hours, so didn't feel I should ask to take any hops home with me.

Louie, I did see your hop pics. Those looked nice and full! Can't wait to pick my own next year!

Hop ash beer...that would be the definition of being fully assimilated!!

Man that looks so fun. Wish I could've been there. Hopefully I can grow some hops next year and get a taste for what it's like!

If any of you have a Facebook account. Please log on and "Like" the Arrowhead Hops page. They are one like away from 1,000, and then they are going to have a prize drawing of some sort. Might be a free rhizome or something, never know...
