Thanks Ron but I did try that this morning but I knew something was going on as I could smell the hops from 6 feet away! That's a sure sign gases are escaping from the pale but I actually think my low temps are the reason for a somewhat slower start. And the temp difference between the starter and wort was not as close as I normally pitch.
I'm not concerned, just trying to see what, if any, differences I see with added oxygen.

:wow: you called me sir!

OK, I am fully admitting I'm an idiot! Hey, I didn't ask for a show of hands.
You know those 3 piece airlocks where you fill the mail piece, then you put he middle piece in and cap it? Maybe not having the middle piece makes a difference why the airlock wasn't showing anything. :wow:
Amazing how that small, domed shaped inside piece makes the airlock work like, well, an airlock.

Lots of activity now so who knows when it really started it's bizniss! Sorry to alarm the smart folks of the group so just move along. Nothing to see here but a very experienced idiot!

Yes, but the entertainment value you provide is priceless.

Glad all is going well with the beer.

Bill, you asked the question at the perfect time. My just kegged batch got me right where I wanted so I think this is 4 out of 5 batches that were either on or much closer to where I should be. Other than the extra aeration, I didn't change anything.
But, as I've said, when I used my 9 gallon pot, I never seemed to have this problem. I'm just about ready to mark this one as 'solved'.

Goes to show, sometimes the most obvious things are the hardest to figure out. For me nothing beats a good night's sleep and a fresh pot of coffee the next morning, to figure out in 10 miutes what took me 5 hours the day before. But then what do I know, I only love brewing beer.
