Columbus.....Centennial..Simcoe....Oh my You guys got me wanting to brew this up again, keep us posted on this one Chris. I might just have to follow your lead and brew this in a couple weeks. Going to go back over this thread and see if I can find your recipe.BlackDuck wrote:Gravity is at 1.012, right at the predicted final number. According to my notes between the first batch and this batch, the color was the same. The bitterness had a little more bite in it this time...the kind that socks you right on the back of the tongue. Man...it was good.
Here's a proud taster in front of all the dry hops ready to go in:

I dunno Chris, the #2 looks a lot lighter than #1.
Re: Pliny the Elder
Nah, I'm thinking it's not so good and you should send a sample for me to let you know for sure. Plus, in order to do it right, I suggest you brew 1 a week for the next 4 weeks to make sure you've got it right.
Now get going!

Re: Pliny the Elder
Bottled up batch #2 today. I dry hopped commando and was careful on the siphon to the bottling bucket to make sure I didn't suck over a ton of hop crap. It really makes a difference on the final yield of the batch. I filled 45 full bottles and had about 8 ounces to drink while I cleaned up. It's a good beer, but I'm thinking that I like the Columbus Brewing Bodhi clone that I did better. When the Pliny is ready, I'm going to have to do a side by side to make the decision.

Re: Pliny the Elder
If it's anywhere close to the first one you brewed, those 45 bottle are going to be great and go way to fast.
When I transfer to my bottling bucket or keg when using that amount of hops I sanitize a zip tie and muslin sack. Zip it to the end of the tube and drain away. Catches just about everything and I get one to two more beers.

I'm not saying that I don't like it....cause I do, it's a tasty beer. And your right, they will dissapear quick. But I think I like the other better. Next time I brew the Bodhi clone, I'll send you one.

That Bodhi was awesome too! I could survive on an island with either of those.

But Chris, will the Bohdi make sweet love to your mouth like the Pliny did?

Re: Pliny the Elder
Just in case anyone is interested in a kit, Northern Brewer now has both the AG and specialty grain/extract kits now. Looking at the recipe for AG, it's different than what I've seen. They even use a hopshot and the price seems pretty reasonable though I can make it much cheaper.

Re: Pliny the Elder
The $44 price for the AG kit is actually a bit cheaper than the kit I bought from AHB last time. Really not bad either when you've got about $25 bucks in hops alone. The hop shot sound pretty interesting too.

Yeah, but it says it has Amarillo. Now I LOVE Amarillo, but it does not belong in Pliny period, end of story.

Re: Pliny the Elder
Pliny part 2 is done! Hopefully they'll be no fusels this time. I went 100% commando. I forgot to take a hydrometer reading before adding the yeast but the Refractometer showed 1.073 and my hydrometer is usually a little bit higher.
Of course, I have high hopes but I doubt it will be close to Jeff and Chris's versions but I can think positive until then.

I have so enjoyed some of your kick ass beers, that I have no doubt that this one will be just as good also.
What do you think of this. A friend was over a little while ago, I had given him my Ovila Quad (he liked it) my Saison (he loved it) and my Pliny (he said not to waste anymore IPAs on him, not his style).
Should I keep him as a friend? That would leave more for me.
