We had a donkey when I was a kid. Her name was Charity and she was a rescue donkey we took in from friend (an AG teacher) was trying to find a home for.

She was a blast; smart as a whip as they say, fun and funny.

She used to play a game we called "Get and Be Gotten" with our Doberman in the back yard, where they'd chase each other around pretending they wanted to rip each others guts out and then running at the last minute to become the chase-ee. Laugh foam through your nose, belly hugging, can't breath funny stuff to watch.

She went with me "unleashed" when I took the clan (six plus dogs) on a trek to the river and she would come into the little adobe back house where the kids rooms were and lay on the floor in front of the TV to have her "belly rubbed" with a garden rake... all fours in the air like a dog.

I for one know why you got another one B-man.

My one lone surviving dog Conan "the Barbarian" is in the other room, on his back rolling and twisting, making sounds of blissfulness the likes Mrs. Inkleg can't match when I bring my A game. ;) He is a very silly Bassett.

My wife said he went off a couple times before she went to work and when I pulled in the drive. tonight he came running over braying, He's a loud and friendly one, what I like.

Found her today running a neighborhood where nobody knew who she was. Busy streets nearby. No collar or chip, full of fleas but looks well-fed. Took her to the vet and got the fleas treated, found out she's in heat. Not prepared to deal with that, but SICSA says they can't spay until I've had her 2 weeks. So I took her to the county shelter to see if somebody claims her. If nobody gets her in 3 days they'll call me and I can adopt her if I choose. They'll spay, chip, and vaccinate her for cheap. I need to make decisions. My other dogs are 13 and 11, she's only 8-12 months. They'd have to make some adjustments.

Consider this...

From the look on her face, I think she has already adopted you!

Well she certainly looks like she's used to riding in the car. And she seems very calm; a lot of dogs get very skittish when they realize how lost they really are so she may well still be from near the area where you found her. Any chance to post her pic around the neighborhood? If she was just coming into season she might have dug herself out of a yard a/o had help from the boy dog around the corner.

She's terrified of doorways into buildings (but not out) and was nervous about the truck. I took the picture after several minutes of talking to her very softly. She kept trying to climb over the console into my lap. Not sure if she was scared or just lonely over there on the passenger seat. :) I checked the local missing pet FB pages and didn't see her anywhere.

How did your other dogs get along with her during the brief time you had her?

They haven't met her yet, I took her to the vet then straight to the shelter. I was still working and couldn't leave her in the car, and I wasn't close to home. They sure sniffed me good when I got in the door though!

The shelter is going to euthanize the puppy. They said she failed her temperament test, that she charged another dog and tried to bite it. She was so sweet and cuddly with me, I have a hard time believing it. I'm heartbroken. I put her there. I should have left her where I found her.

You did nothing wrong alb, if it's anyone's fault, it's the one that let her loose to begin with. They let her down as well as you.
You can't save all dogs so all I can tell you is to love the one's you have.
Sorry to hear this news.

If you left her where you found her she may have starved to death, or been hit by a car and died slowly over a period of days. Whatever the outcome, you did her a favor. I am surprised that dog aggressiveness was a temperament test failure though.

Alb, please don't feel bad. You did all you could to save and protect that puppy and ultimately it is out of your control. Over the last few years my wife and I have been fostering dogs through a local dog rescue and there have a been a few that just didn' mesh well with our dog(s) and we had to find other homes for them and few just couldn't cope well with other pets and or change at all. Some of that comes from where they originally came from and what happened to them before, whether abuse, neglect or having been feral and not trusting humans at all, you just never know. So hold you chin up and know that you did what was best and don't stop trying to help these poor animals.

I think you deserve a homebrew and a big hug! :guzzle:
