I'm bottling nothing tonight, because it appears the Mr Beer spigots aren't the only ones that break.

I thought I had an extra, but I was wrong.

Was that just the standard bottling bucket? At least it happened before the beer went in it.
Bummer!

Yea...I was lucky. I noticed the leak when I poured the sanitizer into the bucket. I'll have to stop at the store tomorrow to get a new spigot. Unfortunatley I had already sanitized the bottles and they were on the bottle tree, so I'll have to do that again tomorrow.

But that's OK, cause this could have been a lot worse.

Yea I lost a full lbk of mr beer beer a few years ago and then the next time with the "new" spigots, lost most of an IPA. I was mad for quite a while.

Glad you caught it before beer had to die.

Oh man...that's awful. SO much less awful than it could've been--and maybe you don't despise bottling the way I do, but things like this make me hate bottling even more.

Despite the fact that I've had PLENTY of similar issues when kegging. Just not having to deal with bottles is a pretty big win in my book. ;)

Glad you didn't have the beer in it yet BD.

A great reminder that using the sanitizer as a leak check should always be part of our process.

Since the first time that happened to me I keep 3 spares on a shelf in my brew cabinet just in case. It's a PITA but each time I sanitize my Ale Pails I unscrew the spigots and hold them up to a light to inspect for trub and/or cracks. If I see any signs of a crack into the garbage it goes. For trub removal I use some warm water and OxiClean FREE and a small diameter brush to clean out the insides of the red and white parts until they're spotless.

Since doing this maintenance before filling the buckets with wort or beer I haven't had one split since. I also talk to myself when lifting and setting the buckets down inside my chest freezer too. I pay close attention so I don't knock the spigots around against anything or set a full bucket down on a spigot either.

Wow - that stinks. I'm going to double check all mine from now on. Ironically, I just filled an LBK on Tues with a cheap wine batch and noticed my spigot was broke when I was sanitizing. Luckily, I have a few spares so no harm.

I think its a good idea to have spare "parts" around. The few bucks of "inventory" is well worth it so one does not lose a pricey 5 gal batch of beer.

Brewed 5 gallons of Finally Graduated, Mom and Dad Are Over The Moon, a Blue Moon clone. First time "first hopping".

55 gallons this year so far.

Last couple days brewed a Blackberry and a Raspberry Cider, an Oatmeal Stout and finally a Summer Blonde. Now to find time to do up a couple IPAs and an English IPA (RCE) I've been wanting to brew up again.

Yes that is the brew date. It's been in the primary for just a little while.
