I have my own opinions on the best guitarist but since some are better at rock than jazz and yada, yada, yada, I'll just list the ones I like in order (I've seen many of these guys live).
Brian May (Queen)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Eric Clapton (duh)
Jeff Beck (duh, duh)
There are others that always get recognition and I agree...Hendrix, Page, Trower and I could go on and on. There are tons but I think the first 2 have such unique sounds that they stand out. Not only because of their sounds, but the way they master and control those sounds. It's one thing to be able to play a solo like someone but for it to become a part of you is different. Those guys are so natural it's like the guitar is part of their bodies.
