Glass Carboys + mistake = trouble
So I was emptying a glass carboy full of Starsan last Thursday night when it slipped out of my hands, hit the edge of my sanitary tub and shattered, slashing my right wrist in the process. After a loud crash, and louder scream for help on my part, my wife raced me to the ER. That led to a 3 hour emergency surgery to repair a severed artery, nerve and ligament. After a few days, I'm finally getting relatively back to to normal. I started back to work yesterday and the prognosis is positive. I'm still looking at a few weeks of rest followed by a few months of rehab but in the end I should get back to mostly normal. Just wanted to share my story so that everyone is extra careful. All in all, I've been extremely fortunate.

Wow that's pretty horrible, sorry you had to go through that. Here's to a full and speedy recovery.

Several years ago I badly scalded my right foot. Looking back now, I know the accident was due to my inexperience at the time. A metal handle, really not more than a thick wire, pulled itself free of the plastic bucket I was carrying. The lesson I learned the hard way was to never carry a plastic bucket filled with 165 F water. My poor toes looked like boiled hotdogs for weeks. Fortunately for me everything but the top of a shoe that had to be cut off healed ok.

That is bad but glad you are recovering. Something like that might make some give up brewing all together. I had almost the exact same thing happen when rinsing out my Big Mouth Bubbler in the sink but luckily only some minor cuts and bleeding. I ended up totally changing the way I brew because of that and now no glass and use pumps and carts instead of lifting. Please Keep us informed.

Hey All!
I'm 4 weeks out from my accident and recovery is on schedule per my Dr. My prognosis is still looking good, but it will still be 2 months before we have a good idea how complete my recovery will be.
The good news is that last night my son helped me keg the batch I was working on when I had my accident.
My wife got to name it: Glass Shard Belgian Golden Ale
Kind of catchy? I like it, just not sure what the label should look like...

ckd022, man, I missed this somehow, but I'm glad your on the mend.
I can tell you that I have not and never will again used glass anything for brewing after my own carboy exploding experience many (20+) years ago.
My only screw up lately was hitting a slippery spot on an off camber turn and sliding under the barrier tape. (Inkleg knows what I'm talking about LOL).
