Some cars use them to increase performance by reducing the unsprung mass but I don't think that is too common due to the pain it creates in replacing them. I think you have to dissassemble the axles on most designs.

Some off road vehicles such as the HMMWV aka Humvee or the Unimog use inboard brakes in order to allow the offset axles they have to give them more ground clearance.
