Wonder if it has English Crystal in it. I've got some and have been playing around with a recipe for a long while trying to get to a similar color and haven't been able to so far without keeping it clean.
Can't find any scores on Rate Beer or Beer Advocate but Rate Beer lists it as a Black IPA. Is it?

Maltoferm A-6001 Dry Black Malt Extract made me a Kolsch that dark but not roasty. It comes in little 2.5oz vials as a powder. There is a liquid version available too (A-6000 I think). You don't need to use a lot to adjust color.
I've had good luck cold steeping huskless dark grains and getting no roastyness too. EDIT: Cold steeped regular dark grains makes them a lot mellower as well.
English Medium/Dark Crystal has a pronounced flavor that screams ESB. I love the stuff, but you cant use it for neutral color adjustment.

Yea, I learned that but the mistake was quite tasty in a pale ale (that wasn't very pale).mashani wrote: English Medium/Dark Crystal has a pronounced flavor that screams ESB. I love the stuff, but you cant use it for neutral color adjustment.

The last bottle of the "Graff" I made. I'll make this again next fall. It's tasty.

Had a bunch of home brews at my local club meet. Our featured speaker was the founder/owner/Brewer of Postdoc Brewing; speaking about water chemistry. My favorite I had a chance to sample was the Imperial Red IPA; brewed with Maris Otter & Red X malts. All Galaxy hops & 8% ABV, Delicious!

Re: What are you drinking?
Green Flash Segal Ranch Session IPA.
Might be the hoppiest commercial 4.5% beer I've had. It's more hoppy then the stone session beer. It's very pungent, and would not be to everyone's tastes. Lots of flavor from tomahawk hops comes through, with centennial and cascade piled on top. It's basically dank piney resin with some citrus and flowers on top. I like it, but if you wanted some fruitiness beyond some grapefruit, there is non of that here. It has good body for 4.5%, holds a head and laces a glass, and seems balanced somewhat for 65 IBUs, so I think it's a bigger grain bill mashed to be less fermentable, or a good amount of some sort of dextrin malt.
I have some of the Stone Red-X which I will try tomorrow.

Re: What are you drinking?
Sat in on a brewing session at Briarscratch Brewing for a bit this afternoon way out in the country outside of Nashville. I was delivering a mess of bomber bottles that were lingering on shelves in my brewing area unused. These bottles will now be used by the brewery to bottle their barrel aged honey rye porter, so I was glad to run out and clear out some of my excess bottles, and in return get to check out the brewery. Self distro in their county only, and pushing out as much product as they can to keep up with demand. Owner also runs a pizza/brew pub further into the city. Smallest of small micro breweries... 2.5 barrel system, six fermenters... they brew double runs about 2-3 days a week, so whatever math that works out to would be their normal production, limited by fermenter space and keg availability...
Because they are two counties away from my home, I've had very little chance to taste their beers. Sampled four beers while there there... all four were very, very good. Honey Rye Porter (non barrel aged version), cream ale, pale ale, and a new saison he made with yeast harvested on their property. This beer was just tapped for the first time for their one year anniversary party this weekend (I took home a growler).
Fun to see breweries of all sizes and shapes. The owner has big plans, but seems pretty content to stay small. He's the only brewery in his county, and seems to be doing well in getting his beer identified as the county's beer. Very ambitious guy, and I hope he continues to do well...

Drinking a home brewed double IPA. This one was all Chinook pellet hops, with two dry hop additions (one at 7 days, one at 3 days) in the fermenter before kegging. This is a big beer, finished at 10% ABV. I think the hops are perfect on this, and I think I will continue the double dry hop on future batches.

Re: What are you drinking?
I made a 1G AG IPA recipe awhile back using only chinook hops, the kitchen smelled wonderful while I was making it. The beer was pretty good too.

That lemondrop hop is a little strange, like having a lemon head candy only not sweet. A little spice at the finish. It’s a nice twist but I don’t think I’d want it all the time.

I wonder if the El Dorado is messing with the Lemon Drop. El Dorado, I just am not a fan, it makes everything taste weird like I put baby aspirin or jolly ranchers in my beer.
Re: What are you drinking?
Two different directions this afternoon...
First up, Blue Pants Pilsener. I find it interesting how craft's new fascination is going right for BMC's wheelhouse. Nicely done. Crushable. Nice malt, with a balanced german hop bite.
Next up, New Holland Blue Sunday Sour (2016). Wow, this is nice. Sour, but not nail polish. Some barrel and fruit shine through. New Holland rarely disappoints with their sours. Can't beat the $7 price point. This is their anniversary beer, and is a blend of all of their barrel aged beers. Will definitely go pick up a few more for aging.
