It's -2 here right now in the southern part of western NY, the sun is shining and it looks deceiving nice outside, you know it's not when you step out though. We aren't getting the big blizzard type storm they are getting north of us in the Buffalo area. Been wondering how BigPapaG and JimmyPirate are making out, I keep getting alerts on my phone how everything is shut down up there. I-90 has been shut down from Buffalo to the PA border for a while now.

It was 58 in my fermentation room this morning. I put a small space heater in there and now it's 65.

My power went out after I posted last night. Was out for about 5 hours. Doesn't sound like much, but it got cold inside really fast and everything I've got fermenting dropped into the mid 50s. Good thing they all have lager yeast.

It's a little late for this but then this may not have been the last cold snap of the season; Remember to watch out for your dogs when they go out to do their "business". My little Rat Terrier freezes his paws almost instantly when he goes out. Then he does want to go out again until it's almost too late. Holding it for that long can cause kidney problems. Almost had to go out and carry him back in a couple times during the coldest weather.

Re: It's HOW cold???!
Good reminder chuck. I let my dog go out today whilst I was snow blowing. I noticed he was sitting and licking his paws. Then I noticed there was blood around him. I immediately got him back inside, got the bleeding stopped. I feel bad about it, we were outside for about 10 minutes. One of his pads had froze/cracked and started bleeding that darn quick. Please be careful with your pets outside y'all, it does not take long to hurt them with this severe cold!

Re: It's HOW cold???!
My roommates dog which is a German Shepherd Dog / Chow mix is normally very finicky about going out when the weather hits the 10 - 15 f range or it rains. He'll poke his head out and then look up at you like you are crazy before he turns around and walks away. Eventually he will have to go bad enough and will go out. However when it was sitting around -15f he kept begging to go outside. Then he would lay down in the snow and stay there for about 15 minutes before he would come back in.
I have to say even though it's -5f out right now because there is no wind it feels so much warmer than it was yesterday. I guess it is also a 10 degree difference but it seems so drastic.

If you live in an area where the weather gets so bad that the dogs don't want to go out in it there are booties you can get for them to protect their feet.
You should get the dogs used to wearing them before the bad weather has already arrived. If you don't want to go out in it bare foot I don't see why anyone would expect a dog to.

if the snow is deep enough for your sized dog, just toss them in... that will cause them to do what ever they needed to do. then reel them back in. ~The Cat.

Re: It's HOW cold???!
I like to do some hunting during 2nd archery and most of it fell over the time span of this cold spell. I have some good gear but no way I was heading out at 6am in this stuff. Even on the better days it was still in the 20's and we've had an inch or 2 of snow just about every day. In my youth I wouldnt have thought twice about heading out for a shot at a deer. Those days have long since passed. I'll eat the tag this year and be happy to do it.

About eight years ago I went out when it was -17°, -30° wind chill. Dumbest thing I ever did.
