What IPA is that Jeff?
I have a job which I hate. In fact, it's just about to be our busy time when all the a-holes who think they know what they are doing come and wreak havoc on my life. I'd quit but I hate to give up the 5 million a year salary so I just plan to stick it out until I retire at the age of 90!

Show me the hops, er, I mean, money!
My job could definitely be reality tv. In fact, most retail businesses could do well on tv. What comes out of peoples mouths is amazing (amazingly ignorant).

Re: Hop Juice
OK fellas, I had a thought. I've got about a .25 ounce of just about all the hops that went into this recipe. Instead of keeping a .25 ounce of each around in the freezer, I'm thinking about dumping them in for a 4 day dry hop. Might as well put as much aroma in it as I can.
What do you guys think?

Re: Hop Juice
I seriously believe that when it comes to dry hopping, you can't put too much. I planned on adding about 1.5 oz more than the recipe, sediment be damned!
To me, there's nothing I enjoy more than the punch in the nose right before a punch in the mouth, humulusly speaking (get it, humulus??????-I kill myself I'm so funny)
Speaking of funny, Midwest has a new recipe out called Hop Lord (which was going to be my borg name at one time) that boasts 8 oz of hops. While I'm sure it's likely good, it's not boast worthy, is it?

Re: Hop Juice
That's kind of what I thought you would say. I'll go measure what I've got for sure.
That Hop Lord is an interesting recipe. It's got hops in the mash, then at 60 minutes, then at 5 minutes and a dry hop. Not many additions for an IIPA. It also has 2 pounds of sugar in it. No wonder it's got a gravity of 1.090. I almost put hops in the mash for the Hop Juice, but read in a few places that it really doesn't do much, and it may be more of a waste of hops.

Re: Hop Juice
OK...so here's exactly what I've got:
1/4 oz Apollo
1/4 oz Simcoe
3/4 oz Amarillo
3/4 oz Columbus
I didn't think I had that much Amarillo and Columbus. I will surely add the Apollo and Simcoe, but should I add all of the Amarillo and Simcoe too??

Re: Hop Juice
My planned dry hop is about 6 oz total so an increase of about 2 from what you had in your recipe. I am going a bit heavy on the Columbus and split the rest between Simcoe and Amarillo. I don't have much if any of Apollo left though I must admit, I'm growing fond of it. I have so many hops to use that I don't want to buy anything else and store it just yet.
But, I'd say, go for it!
I don't get 2 lbs of corn sugar even in a IIPA. And I agree with mash hopping as being a waste but having not tried it yet, it's not fair for me to judge. It's not something on my radar.

Re: Hop Juice
Ok, mines in the fermenter. A few brew day mishaps, but hey, what's a brew day that goes smooth......BORING.....that's what. While draining my BIAB bag using my new electric system my colander slipped into the pot. Splashing hot sticky wort over everything, including me. After that the brew day went downhill. The whole day was just disorganized, we've all had days like that.
In the end I ended with 5.5 gallons of 1.074 wort that I pitched 2 cups of yeast slurry from Belas IPA into. It's sitting in the fridge at 18.7*c with a blow off tube.
Just a few recipe changes, mainly do to packaging math and the fact that I'm lazy.
60 minute Amarillo from 1.25 to 1oz.
15 minute Centennial from .75 to 1oz.
10 minute Columbus from .75 to .50oz
5 minute Apollo from .75 to 1oz.
0 minute Apollo from .75 to 1oz.
I'll dry hop in the keg with 1oz of each called for.
Just small changes, hope you don't mind Chris.

Re: Hop Juice
Don't mind the changes at all. Paul is changing the hop schedule up a bit too. And I'm going to dry hop more than I had originally written in the recipe. Actually, I'm glad we are brewing this slightly different than each other. It will make it fun to compare. Bummer your day didn't go smoothly though. Hope that hot wort didn't burn you.

Nothing that a little cussing didn't fix. I laugh now, it was in my hair, soaked my shirt and was dripping off my reading glasses.
On top of all of that, everything I brew with is now covered in yellow/green pollen. Welcome to spring time outdoor brewing in the South.
