Big Red One

Getting through my Mr. Beer HME's...after today have 5 more cans I think.

Brewed the Big Red One recipe today. I picked this up when they had the 25% recipe sale and was able to combine that with a 20% coupon so got a good deal on it. I have to say it was actually a pleasure to knock off a simple Mr. Beer batch, a little less than 1 hour from start to finishing cleanup.

The only (almost) snag was when I added the Weissbeer and then the larger Bewitched can to the 4 quarts of water and the hopsack I discovered that in the 3 quart saucepan I've been using for Mr. Beer kits the wort was up to a hair below the very top of the pot! Needless to say I had to stir very very carefully!!! So if anyone here does a recipe that needs 1 large HME & 1 small HME or equivalent you really need a bigger pot than 3 qts!

Mr. Beer says OG should be 1.082 but I overfilled the LBK. Qbrew says 1.076, I was at 1.072 so should wind up right about 7% I would think. Then I need to bottle her up and forget about her for 9 months or so...

Haha!!!

Only have used the 3 qt. for straight up Mr. Beer kits. I also have a 5 gallon stainless and a 7.5 gallon aluminum Bayou Classic.

I wanted to make this one and I'm not really a big red ale fan.

I don't think the bewiched amber plus weissbier will yield a red ale, though to be honest I'm not sure what to expect!

I tried one of these the other night (4 months +) - tasty but still needs to condition out more. I won't try another until after (or maybe on) July 4th. It seemed stronger than a 7.5% - the first pint of a 22 oz. bottle had me feeling good! OF course I also had a 12 oz. bottle of mt RCE Hop Stoopid clone prior so...
