Zombie thread lives

Post by Inkleg »

Thought I'd dig this up and post here. One to not derail the other thread and two just skimming through this I realized, we're a bunch of goofballs.

I've used White Labs WLP007 for all three of mine. Mashed in at 156 this time, because I wanted to see what a little more body brings to it and pitched a very active 1500mL starter at 64*. It was going the next morning and holding within one degree of 64.

I used 04 last time but looking back at this and my records, I made a note to use 007 next time which I will. I went to a 157 mash and made notes to bring it to 156. But, my first mistake was trying gelatin which likely made a not so great beer even less so.
Are you still using hops at 20 minutes? That one is not often stocked locally and I hate to buy hops when I have so many though I may have some lying around.

I used Crystal. It's the only beer I've used it in so I had some left over from the last brew.

I don't recall if I posted the recipe that I used but I know the version you and I did was slightly different Paul (IIRC). In any case, here is what I brewed:

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Boil Size: 7.00 gal
Post Boil Volume: 5.50 gal
Estimated OG: 1.047 SG
Estimated Color: 16.9 SRM
Estimated IBU: 63.1 IBUs
Boil Time: 90 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amt Name Type # %/IBU
9 lbs 5.9 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (3.0 SRM) Grain 1 84.6 %
1 lbs 1.6 oz Crystal 75 (75.0 SRM) Grain 2 9.9 %
8.8 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain 3 5.0 %
1.0 oz Black (Patent) Malt (500.0 SRM) Grain 4 0.5 %
0.47 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [16.30 %] - Boil 90. Hop 5 28.2 IBUs
0.80 oz Amarillo Gold [8.40 %] - Boil 30.0 min Hop 6 17.7 IBUs
1.00 oz Crystal [4.10 %] - Boil 20.0 min Hop 7 8.5 IBUs
0.35 oz Simcoe [11.90 %] - Boil 20.0 min Hop 8 8.7 IBUs
0.50 Items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15.0 mins) Fining 9 -
1.0 pkg Dry English Ale (White Labs #WLP007) [35 Yeast 10 -
1.00 tsp Yeast Nutrient (Primary 3.0 days) Other 11 -
0.75 oz Simcoe [13.00 %] - Dry Hop 7.0 Days Hop 12 0.0 IBUs
1.50 oz Amarillo Gold [9.20 %] - Dry Hop 5.0 Day Hop 13 0.0 IBUs

I put my foot in my mouth earlier. I did use WLP007 in this, not 04.

And as noted elsewhere I tossed in some Citra during the dryhop just because I had some left over that I was getting rid of.

I also mashed at 156.

Thanks, I just checked my Beersmith and it looks pretty much the same though mine has C150 instead of C120. I thought mine came from You Can Brew It but am not sure.

Zombie thread arise!!!!!
Have a WLP007 starter going to brew Levitation this weekend. I was inspired by Ron, who sent me his Arrogant Amber and that I need some yeast slurry for my Toast to Big Fuzzy RIS that I'm brewing May 7th National Home Brew Day.
Have been reading exBEERiments and plan to try a 30 minute boil. Looking forward to having this on tap again.

This will be interesting for sure. I have no problem doing 30 or even 20 minute boils for some recipes but I've not thought about converting any of my "traditional" recipes to shorter boil times.

Y'all know I've been the one to give different things a try, work or fail.
Heck the 2 liter starter I made earlier today is a mix of leftover Pliny wort and some Lager wort from 10/24/15 :o . Yep, both have been in the fridge since the original beer was brewed. Mixed them together with some water to get a starter SG of 1.040. Boiled for 10 minutes, chilled and pitched the WLP007. Not to worry, I tasted the 6 month old wort. Tasted like.........well......wort.

Just went to the kitchen and looked at the Frankin Starter. Signs of activity within 6 hours. We shall see.
