Brew Demon Conical

Post by SelfFueled »

Anybody have used the BD conical fermenter?

I was just wondering if the trub gets up to the spigot or if it is much lower and there is a bit of waste/want not.

How would you compare it to a MB LBK?

Thanks, I actually just found and read that!!!

Any thoughts on real life usage, would you prefer the LBK or the LBC?
I have 6 LBK, and not sure if this would be truly an upgrade or not.

I only see a pro for the less exposed trub to wort.
Not sure how much if any that matters in brewing?

Lusting after the conical!
Waiting for the improvements and then I might pull the trigger for a couple!

Thanks Louie! :happybeer:

My concern re: the BD conical is the height.
I have a dorm-sized fridge that I use as a fermentation chamber. It will fit two LBK's -- one on the bottom and the other above, on a removable shelf. Based on what I think the sizing is on the LBC, I'd only be able to fit one in there...and would probably have to remove the wire shelf to do it, thus reducing storage space for things like LME, yeast, etc.
The trub management aspect does seem nice, though.

I know one of their conicals will fit in my brew fridge, but will it leave enough room to let me keep an LBK in the shelf above is my question. Would still like to have one regardless. Can never have enough beers fermenting.

The spigot... it looks suspiciously like the ones Mr. Beer sells now which I am scared of.

Is it better?

The spigot, as far as I know it is identical to MB

I either read it or on BD site, it mentions it is the same? Unless something has changed.

I know it's a variable flow spigot just like MB, but is it the same manufacturer with same flaws... that is the question...

EDIT: would my trusty locking spigots fit in it perhaps?

I would assume if your locking spigots fit in a MB, they should have same opening size?

I found where I read it is the same.

Not sure how accurate the person is, but if they have a MB LBK, it is easy to compare if same.

Did you have the newer MB spigot with the bottling nipple?
I thought they we redesigned, added a nipple and no longer have problem?

Couldn't you drill the hole out to 1 inch and install a regular spigot like this one?

I'm tempted to buy this, but am extremely satisfied with my 3 gal better bottle with the racking adapter and the whole setup. Granted, it is expensive, but you can control where the spigot picks up the liquid. I have only had to use my auto-siphon once, because I did a massive dry hop, commando style. For my last batch 5 gal batch, I cold-crashed and filled up the keg almost all the way to the top. Normally I have a good 4-5 inches of head space, but this last one was probably 1-2 inches with no trub. I can also grab yeast exactly where I need it, when washing yeast.

I've been thinking about buying one and doing two things:
- Using longer PVC pipe to raise the conical a bit higher
- Boring out the bottom and putting in a standard spigot to act a a yeast drain

Hmmmm....

I'm interested in the 5-6 gallon version they are working on for 2014. Sounds interesting. Wouldn't mind beta testing one of those puppies.
