when to add first hop addition?

Yes BrewDemon and Mr. Beer kits are pretty darn easy but sometime you need a little help from the Borg to get you on the right track. Post your questions here!

when to add first hop addition?

Post by rave808 »

If I was doing extract brewing would I add my first hop addition before or after the hot break?

I don't believe you need to wait till after the hot break. I could be wrong though.
Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain.
Quaintest thoughts — queerest fancies,
Come to life and fade away:
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today.

I always waiting until after the hot break. But I don't know if it's strictly necessary. I've done First Wort Hopping in AG batches, and that's obviously done before the hot break.

The thing is, for bitterness, you want a "hop boil" of a certain time, so when would you begin counting down if you added it before the hot break, i.e. the boiling point?

I don't want to muddy the water, because it may not make much of a difference overall.

For me it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm going for FWH (First Wort Hoping) I throw it in as soon as I drain the wort from the mash tun but I don't start the hop boil timer until it actually boils. With extract brews, I do the hot break first then throw in the hops. This is not FWH as it is already boiling. Some guys throw the DME into the cold water then bring it up to a boil & hot-break. I don't, but if I did FWH with DME I would throw the hops in the cold water also after the DME was thoroughly mixed/dissolved into the water. just my 2-cents worth

Oh so you are just preparing to get away from the Mr. Beer stuff.

If you haven't done looked at it yet you could probably pick up a lot of info in the basic recipe section for doing Extract with Steeping Grains.

Also be sure an ask for opinions on recipes you are interested in because one or more of the Borg may have already brewed it.
