FWIW, "steam beer" is Anchor Brewery's trademark for California Common... It's one and same...

Cali Commons are nice. If When you decide to brew one, I'd recommend looking for White Labs San Francisco Lager yeast. Any lager yeast can be used, of course, but White Labs has a strain specifically for the style.
On the humorous side, I've named my Cali Common recipe "South Ferry Steam Beer", and Kealia keeps reminding me that the name "Steam Beer" is owned by Anchor, and he threatens to turn me in. My response is always that I can't market anything called a steam beer, but since I'm not marketing my homebrew, I can call it anything I want. Look for announcements here about my next recipe, which I'm calling Microsoft Disney Beer.

I tried to make that Mickey Mouse beer but I had to keep re-booting my wort. Took forever!

YEAST!!!!
Check out the yeast vs. what temps you will be able to ferment at first and then based on how you control your temps it should help you pick a beer style that you will be caring for over the next few weeks.

You may have just inspired me, Dave. I think I'm going to change the name of my "brewery" (again). I think I'll call it the "Copy-Right Infringement Brewery" And I'm going to go big with my first infringement and call my next beer, "Let It Be"...beer.

That's the whole idea with a CC. Temp and yeast, totally intriguing, and cool.......Hope that is not any copyright infringement......
