Crying now: Brewbirds are down

Just got told yesterday that I have "de Quervain's tenosynovitis". :(

Started getting stabbing pains at the base of my thumb a while back so I got a store bought thumb brace but the the DOC wants a rigid plastic one on that restrains both wrist and thumb movement. Sounds like with or without a steroid shot it will take 4 to 8 weeks for swelling and inflammation to go down.

The worst part is that it is in my left hand and of course I'm a lefty so I can't not use it completely (try brushing your teeth or combing your hair with your "other" hand  )

It doesn't always hurt, it just suddenly has stabbing pain when I do some particular thumb and wrist turning/twisting combo that is not predictable.

Soooo I will go through whatever pain there is to bottle my last batch which is in cold crash.

I have to use my hand, my primary hand, to do everything to take care of me and BB2 and our girls, there is no other choice so I guess we will not be brewing until or if this goes away. :(

So all that sad moaning being done with I have a question, possibly for brew club members,: if we bought ingredients etc. not the actual beer would it be illegal for a home brewer from a club to make it for you?

Ouch, hope it heals fast/well! Going to be rough.

As far as someone else brewing for you, what's your states laws? My state law is specific on how much I can brew, who I can share it with, etc. Unless your state is crazy, I would imagine it would be as simple as the person brewing having to count it as part of their yearly quantity allowance of probably 100 gallons a year.

That's a bummer...hope it heals up quicker than the expected timeframe.

As far as having someone from a club brew for you if you bought the ingredients...go for it. I'm sure the brewing police won't be watching you that close. And if your really worried about it, have them do most of the work, then you can pitch the yeast. Then you could argue that you actually made the beer, because without the yeast, you wouldn't have beer. You would merely have a sweet barley and hop flavored water.

I also hope for a speedy recovery. Sounds like it's tough since it's a part you use for almost everything.

Sorry Michele, all the best for a speedy recovery. It is NO fun trying to use the opposite hand.
I'd be happy to brew it for you and send it back ready to drink, but I think shipping would take it's toll.

Thanks guys and I have to wonder how people I have seen in the past +with wrist casts on survive from day to day. It is amazing how I can do stuff like when fixing dinner I'm chopping vegies but when I go to put them in the pot a needle gets shoved under my thumb.
Weirdest so far is that it would happen more often while asleep than awake, it seems that there is a combo of thumb extension AND wrist turn/twist that creates the most pain.

I was asking about someone else doing the brewing in the event this takes as long as Docs and internet state. Curious if any of you had heard/read up on the subject.

I can check through e-mail with folks locally if need be and that is an approach we want to take.

Point being that poor BB2 had a few styles he'd been wanting to do lined up so I feel really bad for him that I'm out of commission. He's the best brother in the world and I feel like I let him down even though I know it's not my fault. :(

Sorry to hear about your ailment and brewing dilemma, Michele. I hope the healing goes well. FWIW, if it was me and I did have someone willing and able to help me brew up a few batches, I wouldn't spend a half a second worrying about the legality of it. Having a friend help you when you're hurt is a God-given right, plus how the heck is anyone ever gonna know? I'd help you myself, but I've been sidetracked with ailments also, to where my brewing activities are down to a trickle right now. Hang in there, heal up well, if you find someone to help with the physical part of the brewing under the guidance of you and Andy, then definitely go for it. Heck, maybe you can use this as an opportunity to teach someone new to brew. That would be a win-win situation right there.

Wishing you a good recovery! As for having a friend brew for you, I can't imagine having any problem unless you pay the friend and someone undesired finds out. Even then, who would find and actually be troubled by it? At any rate, the friend would probably like a gift of beer more, and there shouldn't be any problem with that.

Sorry to hear that. On the positive side, you can still type and poke the bear from time to time. :o
