That's interesting. But I didn't see which grains exactly?

I almost did this when I made a Black IPA a little while ago, but decided not to. If you do it, please post your thoughts.

Pretty much any steep-able grain, but in the case they are discussing, only the darkly roasted ones is this necessary with, so Chocolate, Black Patent, Roasted Barley, Chocolate Wheat, Carafa, and Special B... You can also add them late in the mash to avoid the prolonged water contact. I learned all of this after my BlackIPA was bitter from the grains and I decided to change up this part of my process. Have done both to good results. It all makes sense to me in the same way that cold steeping coffee will cause it to be less bitter.

This is the article that I read on this a few years ago that gave me guidance. I think both articles are good in conjunction with each other. Thanks for this article, GR...

I'd be interested in hearing how it comes out. Like Chris, I looked into this but used Midnight Wheat instead.

I've done something similar for my RIS - I steeped all roasted grains (2.5 pounds combined) in 145F water for 30 min separately from the main mash, then combined wort before the boil. Worked very well - no astringency whatsoever, just deep flavor.

I'll need to investigate this further. I may want to employ this technique when I develop the Black IPA I'm going to make for my future son-in-law and his groomsmen.

Thanks, Roger.

I think I will give it a try too. I have a German Porter that is a lager that I think this would work well on. Thanks Gymrat!!

Thanks gymrat!
That makes alot of sense and adds another weapon to the brewing arsenal.
I'm looking at doing another Oatmeal Stout shortly so this will definitely be given a try!

Darn, wish I saw this before doing the Black F-Rye Day IPA sitting in the secondary. Woulda tried a split batch with the grains to see what the differences are. Once again a day late and a dollar short....
