This recipe is based on the Irish Red in Brewing Classic Styles, modified for what I have on hand. It's steeping now.
#3.3 Briess Light LME
#3.3 Muntons Light LME (late addition)
#1.5 Briess Amber LME (late addition)
Steep 6oz Caramel 40, 6oz Caramel 120, 4oz Chocolate 350.
Hops: 1.8 oz Fuggles for 45 minutes.
Yeast, 11g S-04
45 minute 3 gallon boil.
OG 1.054
FG 1.015
SRM 17
IBU 27
The original recipe called for 6oz of Roast Barley 300, which I don't have, and seems too dark. I know that the chocolate will have a different flavor, but I think it will work. As for the name, who doesn't love Maureen? I hope it will be ready for St Patrick's Day.

I have used chocolate instead of roasted barley or black patent in my last two batches of red ale. I actually prefer it. It gives a slightly smoother finish.

Thanks Gym. The roasted barley called for in the book is 300L. My chocolate is 350. After pulling the steeping bag I dropped it in a mixing bowl. Cleaning up, I tasted the drips. Yummy. I can't drink coffee or hot chocolate any more. I'm thinking of putting a mix of grains in the Keurig.

This sounds awesome. We just got a Keurig for Christmas and have been using it at least once a day. Choco malt coffee sounds faaaantastic!

If your beer turns out as good as that lady looked, you'll have brewed one helluva good beer!

Dave, if the brew is anything like the lady, it's the big time for all of us!

A little update, and reminder. I brought this up from the basement last week. Gravity was 1.020, pretty high. I had been fermenting near the furnace, but the oil mechanic came to do a tune up, so all of my fermenters went into the back of the basement. Concerned that it was stuck, I put the batch on the kitchen floor, next to the baseboard heat. Sure enough, it fell another 5 points, close to the estimated FG. Time and temperature=attenuation.

A big update: Friends and family love this beer, and it scored a 37 at a BJCP event. Maureen would be proud.

Great job John!
37 is a great score!
This was the B.E.E.R. Event right?
If so I should have scores by tomorrow... Can't wait!
