Dogfish Head Imperial IPA

Post by Brian N- »

Had one at a pre-Superbowl party, and without doubt one of the best beers I've had. Alcohol content is near 6%, color is medium amber. The fairly rich malt flavor was not overpowered by the hops, which had a medium bitterness, but definitely made enough of a presence to be called an IPA. Mouth feel was smooth, and the finish crisp but not tart. My impression was the malt had an almost nut or chocolate undertone. The hop aroma was outstanding! My friend said it was rather expensive, but not when you consider that beers at the Superbowl were $16!

I don't believe I've had the pleasure of trying one of these but I have had their 60, 90 and 120 minute Ipa's and they are very good. Sadly, we cannot get ANY Dogfish Head beers here in New Orleans so I've had to get mine from friends coming down or when I've made trips to Fla via car and brought some home.

There is a bar and retail store in Pensacola that I visited and the bar had it on draft (60 and 90 min IPA) and they actually do a "69" where they have a pint of half 60 have 90 min........really good stuff. To make it more enticing, Sundays are half price pints so you can get a pint of GOOD quality beer for $2.

Sounds like a nice beer, and I know from my own experience that Dogfish Head does it right.

But I have to wonder....it's called an Imperial IPA, yet you say the ABV is only around 6%. Seems a little low to be calling it "Imperial". Don't get me wrong, if it's good beer, you can call it Monkey Butt, for all I care, but I thought Imperials were much higher gravity beers.

Monkey Butt, I prefer Pink Ass Baboon.
But I actually wondered the same thing. But unless it's a new beer, they name a few as imperial and they're all 8-9% so I don't know exactly what this one is called.

Honestly, I don't think I'd try one if I came across one. I've tried the 60-minute and 90-minute and didn't care for either. Both were too malty-sweet and hot-alcoholic for my taste. I guess I'm more of a West Coast guy.

You know, like Snoop Dog and Ice Cube.

I would like to try one just to say I have, but I my stomach still turns green at the mentions of them... just can't get the *spit* beer out of my head... makes me want to puke.

While I prefer the West Coast IPA style, I do love the 60 and 90 minute. I like how the malt and hops work together to tease my taste buds. If you have any you don't want, send them my way please.
