Save the yeast

Can't you tell I'm on a yeast quest this week?
If I have some somewhat old yeast (4-6 months old-not washed, brewery yeast) and I don't plan on using it for another 3-4 months, wouldn't it help if I made a starter with it and had a few bottles of fresh yeast laying around instead of using a future, 7-10 month old yeast?
I know it was fresh when I got it from the brewery but the guy said I should use it in 2-3 months. I figured before it goes bad or looses many more cells, I should put it on a stir plate and make it produce.
