American prophecy Ale -advice

Post by tssummers50 »

This will be my first Brew Demon recipe. I ordered the prophecy Ale plus recipe with an extra can of prophecy ale HME. I put that in to Q brew for a 2.25 gal batch.
It should come out to 5.6 abv and 35 Ibu's. I will probably dry hop with citra.
Does this sound right? This is my first time using Q Brew.
I am afraid that the prophecy ale with the LME by itself might be weak tasting,so that's Why I added an additional can of HME.
Also adjusted to 2.25 gallons to bring it a little more inline.
Would appreciate any opinions. Thanks in advance!

Without punching the numbers in myself that does sound correct. I believe you will get a quite tasty pale ale from that recipe!
Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.

It's a real simple and basic program (and free) that lets you put your inputs in ( your ingredients) and will give you a basic idea on the outcome. Like IBU's, ABV. color ect. I'll post a link to it when I find it on my computer but I'm sure someone will get it posted faster. I'm just a slow but sure old guy ;)

I'd ferment it for three weeks. I generally ferment all of my batches for three weeks.

Hi Ed
Depending on your yeast, you can make a pretty good estimate. If you used extract, you don't have to worry about efficiency. I generally figure about 75% attenuation, it's a good ballpark. Then you can use any online calculator. I use Brewer's Friend. I also just divide the difference by 8 and add 1/4%. So, if your original gravity was 1.064, your final gravity 1.016, the difference is .048, 48/8=6+1/4=6.25%. For homebrewing, close is good enough.

Never mind, there it is.

Hi Edwin,

The recipe you describe sounds like the BD Wicked American Ale...

So, that should get you about 5.8-6.0% ABV assuming all goes well. (BD says 6%)

I would let it ferment for at least 14 days, and frankly, most of my brews stay in the fermenter for 18-21 days to give the yeast time to clean up after themselves, removing off flavors etc.

Hope this helps... And I suggest getting a hydrometer and measuring tube for about $8-$10 either at your local home brew shop or online.

Cheers!

Honestly you should figure the ABV wil come out below what a company claims for extract kits.

Unless you are going to stand there an scrape every last molecule out of the can.

Also, sometimes they are optimistic about attenuation. They may look at best case attenuation and post ABV based on that.

Also attenuation/fermentability changes with the age of the LME/HME. The older it gets, the less it probably is, is the short answer.

But I don't think anyone has said this yet, but we usually tell new folks that chasing ABV isn't the best goal necessarily, where chasing flavor is. So stress less about ABV. ABV will just happen with the right styles along with the flavor.

My only personal stress with ABV is that I try to avoid too much. I like to drink beer too much.

And welcome to our happy place.
