This is possible because the diagonal cut does not bisect the cubes from corner to corner. Thus, when you move a section with a diagonal cut, even though it matches and creates a full cube, it takes fewer cubes to do so.

Nice try Dave, but zorak is right. Burn the witch. I bet he has a wart too.

What are they doing to that candy bar? So if I do a diagonal slice on my candy bar, slide it over, put the other one in it's place, I get an extra piece of candy?

I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to have to get a few Hershey bars and give this a try.

I thought I was the only one seeing that and didn't want to say anything because I didn't want people to think I have a dirty mind.

The extra section of chocolate is from the small portion displaced by the diagonal cut. It belongs on the top edge. I too think he is made of wood if he is floating us this s_it....so he's a witch...burn him!!!

The chocolate bar animation shows how this works. Notice after the "extra square" is taken out, the entire bar is slightly shorter (the flashing red section at the top of the bar). It's an amount equal to, surprise!, one square! But it's a very subtle difference in overall height of the chocolate bar, so it's easy to fool people into thinking you've just created chocolate from nothing. The same concept is at work in the video. The overall height of the cube "thing" is shorter by just a little bit (a volume equal to, surprise!, three cubes), but it's barely noticeable (even when placed back in the original wooden box). Ta da! Mind-trickery!

OK and I have already spent too much time watching this when I should be doing something else, your theory is good, but how do you explain it ends up 7 x 9 every time? at first I thought the frame was smaller because if you notice it is off camera each time, but it still ends up 7 x 9 = 63 squares.
I also say burn him at the stake before I burn my computer if I watch this again

It's because of where the diagonals are cut. We expect them to bisect the squares equally, but they don't, so when you shift the whole thing, and rearrange it, it makes new squares. I can't explain it geometrically, because even without all the beers I've had tonight, I simply can't totally grasp it, much less explain it. But if you observe when he takes the tiles out of the frame, you'll see that there are bias cuts on more pieces than the ones he manipulates. I'm sure that has something to do with it.
