Looking for ideas on brews with Citra!
So last week's brew day was my first time using Citra hops, and based on the smell alone, I know I want to make more beers with it. The Citra that I have is whole leaf, 14.8% alpha, and came in a 3-pound bag that I won from the raffle at the Coconut Cup competition several weeks ago. Considering I only used a touch over half an ounce on brew day, I've still got a butt-load of it left and don't want to let it spoil. I'd love to get some ideas from y'all of recipes to brew with these hops!
I also have about 14 oz of Belma pellets left from when I bought them last fall. The citrus and tropical flavors will surely work well in tandem, so combining the two in one beer is not out of the question. However, since y'all know me so well , IPAs are out of the question!
Thanks, Borg!

I have no experience with leaf hops. But I used citra in a white wheat beer once, just enough to get a subtle flavor from them, it was delicious.

I have about a half ounce of Citra leaf hops that have been in my fridge for a couple of months. I plan on making an IPA next weekend. Now I've never made this particular IPA yet and, although I know it's going to be out of the style I hope to copy, I want to get these hops used up so I'm going to dry hop with them.

Use them in a Saison, a Summer Wheat (maybe with some Grains of Paradise or some Pink Peppercorns!)
How about some lighty hopped summer pale ales... Session style...
Might add a nice touch to a Tripple, or other Belgian stye beer.
Add them to just about any Fruit Beer to accent the fruit (you know, sweet counterpoint by citrus)
Hmmm, wonder what they would add to a stout or porter?
Put some in a Cali Red... Or a Steam Style beer...
Just thinkin'. Now git brewin'

Hmmmm... I've made a steam lager using the Belma alone. Maybe adding Citra to it would be a nice touch. I've never done a saison before. Might have to look into trying some commercial examples first and see whether I like it or not. The idea of using spices makes me think wheat beer right off the bat... Hmmmmm

All I will say is ZOMBIE DUST!!! Seriously, do an all late Citra (1.5 oz at 20, 15, 10, 5, and 3 oz dry hop for a week) simple grain bill (2-row + 5% light crystal) Pale Ale/IPA. Just make sure to allow for wort loss to all of those leaf hops.

I'll second Zombie Dust though I never had the reel thing. Citra is one of my favorite hops and just using it as a dry hop can do great things,

is that 1.5 oz each addition or 1.5 oz total? cuz if that's each then that'll make a good dent in my Citra supply, but that seems like it's gonna be way too bitter for me.russki wrote:All I will say is ZOMBIE DUST!!! That's for each addition (for a 5-gal batch), so 6 oz total + 3 oz dry hop. And no, this will not be bitter at all, but will give you awesome flavor and aroma of tropical fruit! This is called hopbursting, and since there's no bittering addition, it provides a very smooth and mild bittering.philm00x wrote:is that 1.5 oz each addition or 1.5 oz total? cuz if that's each then that'll make a good dent in my Citra supply, but that seems like it's gonna be way too bitter for me.russki wrote:All I will say is ZOMBIE DUST!!! ok so 2.5 gallon, it'd be .75 oz additions and 1.5 oz dry hop.
I did a hop burst just like this on my own pale ale and (though the judges in competition said it wasn't too great) I thought it was fantastic.
