RCE Tasting

Did a side-by-side of Paul's and mine APA from the RCE. Both beers looked identical.

mine.. nice orange color with good head retention and lacing, hoppy with citrus aroma and flavor, some residual sweetness with a wet finish.

Paul's... nice orange color and good head retention, hoppy with a piney aroma and flavor, son said it was insanely creamy, bready after notes and a dry finish that makes you want more.

I tried Paul's Rye Pale Lager yesterday for my birthday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I like the spiciness that the rye brings to the table. It had a nice crispness to it, though just a tad heavier than a true lager, but it works for me.

I enjoyed working with Paul and both of these RCE beers are very good. I can't wait for the next one.

I just love it when a plan comes together! Haven't had a side by side yet but hope to this weekend if I can stay home long enough to enjoy it. Very much looking forward to seeing the subtle changes the different yeast and substituted hops play in each.
First, I do think the 007 yeast gives it the bready taste and feel. It's not what I would normally chose for a pale ale but it was the perfect opportunity to see what it brings. Next, the orange color. It's amazing what Munich can do besides wonderful flavor. The orange color is a turn on to me in beers.
I think the only thing I'd change is to reduce the crystal 40 by about 1/2 lb and added more 2 row. It's subtle but I think too much for a pale ale though this is a hybrid Pale Ale/IPA. It's definitely one to brew again.

I've enjoyed every RCE I've done and will say it again for those who haven't done this or feel odd about it...JUST DO IT! You get to learn, share and likely get to know a borg member better than you did before. Sharing beers and getting out your beer-box is very much fun and there's no pressure of time.

Feel free to opine. I could use a laugh today.
