Just freakin' great...now what do I do

Was out on the patio yesterday and heard a rustling sound in the yard below and when I looked down there I saw the stink end of a skunk ducking into my rock wall. How it got into the fenced backyard I have no idea, it looked to big to squeeze between the gap in the gate. I was out there a little later and heard mewing so I know the skunk has a baby in that hole.

Any body ever have to get a skunk to leave before?

I believe they are nocturnal so I am concerned that I saw it the daytime. Only a matter of time until there is an encounter with my dogs.

:( :( :( :( :(

See if your local authorities have an Animal Control division, or perhaps the local SPCA could help...

Or... You try to get this guy (Turtleman a.k.a. TV's Wildman) to come over from Kentucky...

Man I'd bring him in from Alaska if he would pull that bugger out of there and take it far, far away.

Yeah, that stinks (pun intended)

Hope you can get them out of there soon.

I had a HUGE coon in my garage and flushed it out with one of those propane mosquito foggers in the daytime. I too had babies. SWMBO read that if you take tennis balls and douse them in ammonia it will drive them away. Since I had neither, I doused a few paper towels in PineSol and voila, problem solved. Dont know if they left cuz they thought the garage burned down or because of the PineSol, but I really dont care. Perhaps dropping a smoke bomb in the hole will get rid of them.

I'm waiting for one of the farm boy types to talk about making some "Uncle Bob's Skunk Stew"... :laugh

We had a problem with animals burrowing all over - woodchucks, etc. Set some live traps, caught a skunk one of the times. Threw a tarp over the cage, then used a coat hanger to open the cage to let him out and get him to run away. Other varmits that we caught turned were "disposed of". Then we lined the ground outside the garden with buried chicken wire. SWMBO gets real mad when varmits eat her veggies.

Try the animal control route first. If all else fails, when you see the skunk leave, block the opening with fencing so they can't get back in. Unfortunately, the babies won't survive, but do you really want a skunk family.

Animal control if your a city slicker. Otherwise, stay up late and shoot the darn thing. I've shot plenty round here, some even had 4 legs. Seriously, call animal control so they can also get the kits out. You don't want them dying in a hole around your house, it will not smell purdy for the summer. Ya might even catch the kits and have a vet *fix* them before they get old enough to spray. They do make great pets, if allowed by your state.

I would definitely call Eddie Garrison @ Funky Skunk Brewery. I'm sure he could figure out a way to make some homebrew to serve to those damn poly-tishuns in Florida...

You go girl. :muahaha: :muahaha: :muahaha: :muahaha: :muahaha: :muahaha:

When I was growing up, my grandpa had a skunk living under his front porch. Nobody ever used that door so there were no direct blasts, but there was always a faint funk in the air. He called it his "kitty" and once in awhile when the smell was fading, he would go bang his cane on the porch floor to refresh the perfume. When my oldest brudder brought his fiancee to meet him, guess who grandpa (with a twinkle in his eye) wanted her to meet? All my cousins remember Grandpa's kitty with a chuckle and a shake of the head. But none of us consider the smell particularly offensive, at least in small doses. It just seems like home, and childhood.

I found a 12ga to be the most efficient method. A .22 the sportier alternative. Just make sure you are up wind!!!

I have read where if the .22 is placed correctly, there will be no spray. It's such a quick ending that the skunks system doesn't even have time to release the stench!! Good luck with that shot!!!!!

ok 1st off, if you shoot a skunk make sure its far away from you and all that you want to keep. also, do not use a trap in that hole!! I'm an old trapper and while trapping fox I would catch a skunk or two a year. once I shot one with a 22 then waited 2-3 min. thought it was dead, it went though all the actions of a dyeing critter so I though it was safe to take out of the trap, boy was I wrong. does any one know what color skunk pee is. I do. Man its been a long time since I've told this story. anyway I think the best thing to do is sour the hole with something. One thing I used to do to gophers is put the lawn mowers exhaust fumes in the hole and run the choke a little. just attach a hose of some kind. oh and make sure there is not a back way out of the den. ha ha. well good luck, and if you do not have good luck ,get some tomato juice, I here it takes the edge off the smell.

Every state has its own trapping laws, so either make sure you're familiar with them, or else call in a professional. As a pest control professional, I know how frequent it happens that a homeowner tries to take matters into their own hands, effs it up, and then calls us in to fix the original problem while undoing the chaos they caused with their DIY attempt.

Unfortunately, it's pricey to call in a professional animal control company, but if your county or town doesn't have a department that can take care of it, you may have to bite the bullet.

Took a few minutes to stop laughing, thanks for that! Yup, I was nailed once or twice as a kid growing up with plenty of stiped kitties to play with. We also had lots of masked ones too, they also make great pets!
