The image should say it all

I was hoping for an amber, or even dark Kolsch with hints of rye but what I got was a dark, roasty, coffee-laced beer. I think there was some rye in it but it's hard to tell because the coffee and roasted flavors dominated this for me. I couldn't drink it.

I'll have to defer to somebody who likes those flavors to try it and give it a proper review.

Bummer that you spent money on a beer that you had to dump!!!

And to think I was saving all of mine to send to Ron. Bummer.
Seriously, this one is on my radar when I run to the store this week. If it's got rye and it's dark, I'm thinking I'll like it.

Sounds delicious, but it doesn't sound like a Kolsch.

Funny I should see this beer pop up in the beer reviews section.
A place I go to offers weekly beer tastings, 2oz pours of 15 different beers for ten bucks. This was the last one on this past weekend's tasting.
I went with 3 people. My notes on my tasting sheet "Falls flat in every category...don't like".
Friend one: "This is NOT good"
Friend two: "Yeah this one is kind of "eh", unimpressive"

One of the old timers (also a fellow homebrewer, but not in my group) wrote down the name of the beer. When his friend asked him why he was writing it down and if he really liked it that much, his reply was "No, I'm writing it down so I know not to accidentally buy it".

FWIW, we all came to our opinions based on a measly 2oz pour and the beer itself didn't really fit in with the theme of the tasting too well. So we can all be wildly wrong in our assessments, but I don't plan on revisiting it. If I want dark, roasty, and/or coffee flavors I'd much rather grab one of the many awesome imperial stouts on the market.

That is very interesting. But why do I feel like I still have to taste it for myself before I agree with you?

Well that's the only way you'll know if it is good to you. There have been plenty of beers I have loved and others have hated and vice-versa. I say pick it up and give it a whirl. I personally am not very fond of rye in beer. I like some good rye whiskey. But in beer it does nothing for me.

If you do end up getting it be sure and give us your thoughts. I would love to see some more opinions on it.

Solution: buy as many as you can, box it up, send to me.

Problem solved. I'm here to help, anytime.

I have a hard time imagining a roasty/coffee like kolsch, but then again I just bottled one with a load of American hops piled on so who am I to judge :)

Yeah, I think what I was hoping for was a kolsch with some rye in it but to me it seems more like a rye stout that they used kolsch yesat in.

This is actually a pretty good description!

Against everyone's opinion, I bought one of these today. Not sure when I'll drink it but I have to see for myself if I'm different (no replies please). I like rye, not a huge kolsch fan but do enjoy them and it's a Stone so I just had to do the deed. I'll post my 2 cents after I've had it so that we can see if I'm on the same page.

The twin and I just tried this and it actually has our approval. While not awesome and I'd not know it was a Stone product, I thought it was a pretty quality beer. I'm not real sure what to classify this one as though. It seems to be out of the normal boundaries.
Sorta black IPA, but it was a low ABV beer and that's cool.
