Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
Since the Calling all Floyd Fans has spawned little side discussions of other guitarists, guitars and equipment. lets give these a home. And to keep this beer related what is your favorite brew when jamming? Since I once again am a newbie to playing I will let our more experienced members start us off.

Re: Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
Great idea for guitar-heads.
When my pals were still living in NOLA, we would get together just about EVERY Wednesday night for a great meal, some homebrew or a new craft brew or two and music. This wasn't as much rock n roll that I grew up in (was in a band from about 7th grade almost thru college and went nowhere) but lots of songs one member wrote as well as some of the classics from the Beatles, U2, Stones. We would start before the meal with homebrew, continue thru the meal and into practice trying to make sure we could stop long enough before we had to pack up and drive home.
I have a 75 Strat, a Paul Reed Smith (megabucks and I rarely even play it though it's nice) and a Hagstom. I have changed the pickups to more modern ones the last few years. I also own 3 acoustic guitars though none are the expensive kind......and an Ovation Mandolin and a cheap, starter banjo. The mandy and banjo I am crippled and can only play enough to fool a few people and have them for fun. I own an Egnater amp. When I was in a band, I had lots more equipment that I'd love to have now but I had to grow up and have a life.
I like many styles of music but am stuck in the early 70's of rock as far as whats in my blood. I can and do enjoy lots of the current music but to me, lots of it are just junk to make a buck. Music is made to sell where as when I grew up, music came out of you from the experiences you've had. That's kind of funny when you think so many of the popular musicians of that time weren't even 20 years old.

Great discussion!
It's been far too long since I've picked up my guitar (my primary instrument is piano), but I have a pretty nice Martin acoustic-electric. My skills are pretty basic as I only started learning to play about 2.5 years ago, but I can lead a sing-a-long, and I've jammed with a few folks (including my dad, who is in a couple of bands and has always been my musical inspiration when I was growing up). I love taking the guitar out on the deck and singing to the squirrels in the trees, with a nice cold brew. Something light, like my fave Two Brothers brew, Sidekick. Good times, good times.
I have a small amp (Fender Mustang digital amp), but have yet to acquire an electric guitar. Maybe someday.... I've had my eye on the Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special.

Re: Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
I play a 2004 Stratocaster, a 2010 Starcaster (cheapie) and an acoustic, another cheapie. I like to drink my homebrew and pic but when I do, I clear the township of any/all critters that can't stand ear-splitting noise... LOL. Right now my amp is a stock VOX A15C1. It's too big, but does sound good at low volumes, when I do play light... LOL.
I don't have a favorite band/guitarist, I like most of them for one style or another.

Before you buy one, drop me a line. I have a nice 2004 Stratocaster I'm toying with selling. Nothing wrong with it, I just can't play much because of my severe carpel tunnel. I can't justify having this nice a 'tar when I can't do it justice. I have new nickle strings to go in it also if I don't put them on the star.evily wrote:I have a small amp (Fender Mustang digital amp), but have yet to acquire an electric guitar. Maybe someday.... Re: Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
I love guitars and have quite a few at around 12 or 14, most of which were purchased in the last 5 years, but I can't play anything on them. My brother, an actual musician, has fewer guitars than I and finds it funny I have so many. I try to learn but it certainly doesn't come natural to me like it did for him. I tried learning guitar as a kid but after 30 minutes of toying with it I would lose interest and go find something else to do. I bought my first electric, a Dean Vendetta, in '09 and tried to learn guitar again then but still I drift in and out of guitar and so haven't really learned any songs.
I don't have any real high dollar ones except for a custom American Strat I got as a gift a few years ago and as nice as it is, I rarely ever take it out of its case to play it. I've got a Hagstrom that I simply bought because of how great it looked and the cool case it came with. Only have 1 acoustic, an old cheapy one from the mid to late 60's I believe and is I think called a "classical" acoustic, possibly Crown or Kay. I have a National dual cutaway hollow-body which I can find almost no info on other than it's probably from the early to mid 70's as well as a vintage Crown hollow-body from about the same time.
I've got a couple 10W amps that I never use because ain't nobody wanna hear the racket I make but after a couple homebrews I sound great in my own mind.

Good judgment comes from experience, which comes from poor judgment.

Hagstrom cases are the best. Kinda retro looking. You can tell by the pic but it's got a great feel to it with lots of locks. I have a red Suede I got for a great deal and it plays as well or better than many much more expensive guitars though I changed both pickups so that I could get a more, crunchier sound out of them. Andy they're not as heavy as Les Pauls.

Wow, good to know! I'd love a Strat! Thanks for the heads up... I will definitely keep this in mind. But first, I must pay for a wedding.FrozenInTime wrote:Before you buy one, drop me a line. I can barely play the radio
Re: Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
My music room is like a store I have so much equipment. I've been playing professionally for 45 years. I started doing gigs with my first teacher when I was 14 and haven't stopped yet.
I love almost any style and type of guitar from Segovia to Hendrix... nylon string classical to Strat.
My first love is jazz and Wes Montgomery is my all time hero.
Sometimes I'll come across a guitar that I forgot about and think " Why have I been storing this all of these years? "
I've recently been dealing with a career ending hand problem. That's when I started to brew. I need something to occupy my mind. Brewing is no substitute for music but it has kept me engaged mentally for a while now.
I'll be gradually selling much of my equipment. I want to get down to one each of:
Archtop
Strat
Tele
335
Steel
Nylon
Uke
Mandolin
Tenor banjo
5 string banjo.
Let's not even talk about distortion pedals, amps and other effects !

I fully understand the "I've recently been dealing with a career ending hand problem." I have a similar problem. I shattered by left shoulder and upper arm. Six surgeries and two total replacements took there toll, loss of fine motor skills. Ironic how another injury has caused me to attempt to play as a way to keep my mind occupied and is part of my pain management regime. Doubt if I will ever play with anyone again it is that bad. It makes the coyotes howl in pain and laughter
I have my trusty ole strat, ibenz, no name 12 and a guitar that my dad made for me. Which is still all apart. I started to refinish it shortly before blowing my shoulder out. Guess I need to get that done. For my amp you guys will laugh. The LOML got rocksmith 2014 for me. Nice bunch effects to play with.

I really know what are going through. I never have any severe pain but I have numbness caused by cubital tunnel nerve compression. I've had two surgeries after many attempts at various non invasive approaches, none of which helped at all. I eventually decided to go for broke and try surgery with a highly regarded hand surgeon. At first it solved the problem but then scar tissues formed around the nerve and choked off the blood supply. The result is nerve damage that will never get better. Surgery was the biggest mistake I have ever made.
I still do gigs but I don't take the high profile jobs that I still get called for.
Re: Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
banjo-guy, I'm very sorry to hear your story. I agree, surgery isn't always the best option but I'm glad you seem to have found a way to deal with this challenge. Good on ya and hopefully, better days ahead.

I don't play the guitar, well "Air Guitar" sometimes but really enjoy listening to Jimmy Page or Alex lifeson play, these guys amaze me everytime I watch them.
Re: Favorite Guitarist or all things Guitar
I can't believe I left out Aleksandar Živojinović (Alex Lifeson) I've seen Rush more than any other band by far.....maybe 9 times (and a younger brother who has seen them all over the US more than 30 times!!!)
He is definitely in top group of guitarists in my list.
