c. coffee to taste at bottling
#2
a.added 1.25 oz Ghiradella unsweetend baking bar at 15 and 1 oz coffee gounds at 15 minutes ( by accident, coffee should have been at flame out .)
b. used US-05
c. added .75 oz of nibs that had been boiled in water for 5 minutes , post fermentation for 4 days
d.no coffee at bottling
coffee was Peets Sumatra,cold brewed.

In response to the hugh outcry for an update
The beer( #2) that had the cocoa bar in the boil had no head at all. it tasted great...close to Founders Breakfast Stout. Founders has a much stronger coffee taste. But I think mine was really good. Perhaps under carbed.
This one is a keeper but I will tweak it for a fuller body and slightly higher carb level. The chocolate comes through in a subtle way. I would like it to be more up front.
I'm surprised that it isn't really bitter because I threw loose coffee grounds with 15 minutes remaining in the boil.
#1 ( with cocoa powder in the boil and brewed with Ecy-10) seems like it needs to age more.it has a slightly sour taste. It poured with a hugh 2.5 inch head that lasted a long time. It is a little over carbed but I tried to carb each beer the same. It actually tastes more bitter than the batch with the coffee grounds added to the boil.
I'm going to let these age for another month and try them again.
I have to many variables between the batches to really pinpoint why they taste so different but it's a fun experiment. I think I'll brew a straight up a Founders Breakfast Stout clone and see what that is like. I love that beer!

I'm actually interested. ...this looks like a beer that should have some age to really enjoy.
I'd love to have so ECY-10 to try. One day....one day!

Interesting...
How would you say the coffee flavor was? Especially #2, you threw grounds in the boil? When I made my java stout that worried me, so I ended up warm brewing some strong coffee and throwing in the primary. To me, I think it needs a bit more coffee, but most of my friends really enjoyed it.

The kit's instructions said that adding coffee grounds at flame out was one way to add coffee flavor. The instructions also said that the flavor would be less strong than adding it at bottling. This is the case.
The coffee flavor is present but not as strong as I would like for # 2.
I mistakenly added the grounds at 15 minutes instead of zero minutes. I thought I spoiled the batch and it would be really bitter but it tasted very good! I would like it to have more coffee flavor. For the #2 batch I didnt add coffee to taste at bottling.
The recipe is low in IBUs but the coffee is acting like a bittering hop . It might be a happy accident to add the grounds at 15.
When I re-brew this I'm not sure if I should add coffee in the boil and also add coffe at bottling.
It just occurred to me that I can easily add more coffee right now! Duh.
The chocolate addition is too weak and the body could be fuller.
Do you know how much coffee you used per gallon Jim ?
