so went to the beer store earlier and picked up a 12 pack of red hook(think bottles will look cool in my collection) anyway im not too big into ipa's but i figured id give the sampler pack a try anyway

so previosly all i tasted was bitter when trying an ipa.....but i really gave this one a chance and tried to taste and get those citrusy flavors i hear about

and im totally getting the grapefruit.....isnt it weird how tastes or smells take you back in memory? tasting this beer makes me think of the first time i tasted grapefruit

Some hops create grapefruit/citrus flavors, yeah, and I personally don't care for too much of it, but a touch blended in with other hop flavors can really give some depth (rather than just bitterness) to an IPA or any beer.

I was actually a little disappointed in the IPA I got from Ommegang this summer. I really enjoyed their Farmhouse Ale and the amber ale, but the IPA was a bit of a turn-off because the grapefruit influence got in the way, IMO.

I prefer IPAs with earthy/pine flavors. I really like my 100 Years War IPA, which uses equal amounts of Centennial and Warrior.
